Rock falls 3-0 to rival IUP

The Slippery Rock volleyball team fell in straight sets to Indiana (Pa.) Friday night in Morrow Field House.

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University volleyball team (10-24, 5-16) fell 3-0 to rival Indiana (Pa.)(13-20, 9-12) Friday night in Morrow Field House.

In the opening set, the Crimson Hawks jumped out to a 4-0 lead before a kill by Michelle Hren and three straight service aces by Caroline Houston tied the game at 4-4. The teams continued to battle back-and-forth before Indiana outlasted The Rock 25-23 to take a 1-0 match advantage.

Slippery Rock got off to a fast start in the second frame and enjoyed a 9-5 lead before consecutive kills from Jaden Zimmer extended the lead to 12-6. Trailing 24-22 late in the set, Indiana surged ahead 25-24 on a kill by Elizabeth Sova and service ace by Joie Hrapla. A vicious spike by Alexandra Fleagle tied the match at 25-25, but consecutive kills by the Hawks gave IUP a 27-25 set victory and 2-0 edge in the match.

Morgan Olson led The Rock to an early 4-1 advantage in the third set before Sova served Indiana to 12 straight points and a 15-5 advantage. Slippery Rock answered with an 11-7 run to climb within striking distance, but the Crimson Hawks withstood the rush to record a 25-17 victory and win the match in straight sets.

Houston led the team with seven kills, 10 digs and four service aces. Fleagle tallied a team-high nine kills (.350 attack percentage) and 14 assists.

Sarah Beals chipped in seven kills and Kayla Woo led the defense with 12 digs.

Sova paced the Indiana offense with 12 kills, a .364 attack percentage and three service aces, followed by Megan Schneider with eight kills and two more players with six kills.

Slippery Rock returns to PSAC-West action tomorrow against first-place Clarion as a part of The Rock's Senior Day. The match is scheduled to start at 2 p.m. in Morrow Field House, with seniors being honored prior to the match.
