ERIE, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University volleyball team (9-20, 4-12) fell 3-1 at Gannon (15-10, 10-6) Friday night in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division action.
The Golden Knights got off to a hot start and took a 14-4 lead before eventually holding off Slippery Rock for a 25-15 win in the opener.
Slippery Rock wasted little time responding. The Rock opened the second set with an 8-2 run before putting the Golden Knights away with 14 team kills and zero errors in a 25-17 set win to tie the match at 1-1.
The teams battled back-and-forth in the third set before Gannon utilized a 6-0 run to propel themselves into the lead at 13-6. The Rock could not overcome the deficit and finally dropped a 25-20 decision after a late rally came up short to fall in the match 2-1.
The Golden Knights went on a 12-0 run midway through the fourth set in a runaway 25-12 set victory, giving Gannon a 3-1 match win.
Kristy Lake led the team with 10 kills, followed by
Caroline Houston with eight kills and a team-high 15 digs.
Michelle Hren chipped in six kills and led SRU with eight total blocks.
Janna Reilly tallied 23 assists and 10 digs for The Rock, while
Kayla Woo totaled 13 digs.
Emily Carver led Gannon with 14 kills, followed by Hannah Kren and Maggie Desrosiers with 12 kills apiece. Kren added seven service aces and Megan Wendel assisted on 50 kills in the win.
The loss extends The Rock's winless streak to a season-high nine games. SRU has a chance to get back on track with a quick turnaround at Mercyhurst tomorrow in a PSAC-West matchup at 3 p.m.
