SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University volleyball team (8-10, 3-2) fell to Mercyhurst (10-5, 4-1) 3-1 Friday night in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference action at Morrow Field House.
Mercyhurst held off The Rock to record a 25-21 win in the opening frame, before Slippery Rock stormed back to take the second set 25-12. The Lakers answered in the third set with a 25-16 win.
The teams were tied 15-15 late in the fourth set before the Lakers went on a 7-1 run to lead 22-16.
Caroline Houston answered the call for Slippery Rock and served the Rock to seven straight points with help from four consecutive blocks by
Michelle Hren,
Kristy Lake and
Sarah Beals to take the 23-22 lead.
The Lakers regained their composure and eventually took the set 26-24 and the match, 3-1.
Hren paced The Rock with nine kills and seven total blocks, while Houston tallied 10 kills.
Kayla Woo led the defensive effort with 24 digs and chipped in two service aces.
Janna Reilly recorded 16 assists and
Alexandra Fleagle added 13 assists.
With the loss, The Rock drops to 8-10 overall and 3-2 in PSAC competition.
Slippery Rock returns to action Saturday against Gannon. Match time is set for 2 p.m. in Morrow Field House.
