Rock volleyball falls in straight sets to rival IUP

The Slippery Rock University volleyball team dropped to the bottom of the PSAC-West with a 3-0 loss to rival Indiana (Pa.) Saturday afternoon.

INDIANA, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University volleyball team (9-18, 4-10) fell to the bottom of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference-West Division with a straight-set loss to rival Indiana (Pa.)(10-17, 6-9) Saturday afternoon.

Slippery Rock fell behind early after dropping 25-21 and 25-14 decisions in the first two sets. The Rock made a late rally in the third set, but eventually fell 25-23.

With the win, the Crimson Hawks extended their winning-streak to four, while The Rock extended its winless streak to a season-high seven matches.

Slippery Rock and Indiana battled back-and-forth in the first set, with 12 ties and 12 lead changes. The Rock held an 18-16 advantage before the Crimson Hawks rallied for a 25-21 set win.

The Rock could not overcome a slow start in the second set and eventually fell 25-14. Slippery Rock rallied in the third set to take a 19-17, but could not complete the comeback as they fell 25-23.

Kristy Lake recorded a team-high seven kills, followed by Michelle Hren with six kills and Caroline Houston with five kills. Janna Reilly tallied 16 assists to lead the team.

Kayla Woo led the team with 14 digs, while Houston chipped in 12 digs to pace the defensive effort for Slippery Rock.

Hren continued her dominance on the net with seven blocks, raising her season total to 109 blocks and moving her into seventh in SRU single-season history.

Slippery Rock returns to PSAC action Tuesday, Oct. 29 at Clarion. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
