ERIE, Pa. – The 25th-ranked Gannon University women's soccer team scored two second half goals to defeat 11th-ranked Slippery Rock University 2-1 Wednesday night in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference action.
The Rock managed big swings in possession and posted advantages of 15-9 in shots and 11-4 in corner kicks, but could not overcome a 76th minute goal that served as the game-winner.
The loss snaps a four-game winning streak for Slippery Rock, which sees its season records drop to 5-2-1 overall and 4-2-1 in PSAC games.
Gannon earned its third win in a row and improved to 6-2 overall and 6-2 in league action.
Slippery Rock posted a 9-5 edge in shots and an 8-1 advantage in corner kicks in the first period but could not break through as the game went to halftime scoreless.
Gannon opened the scoring in the 61st minute when Mani Brueckner scored to the right side of the net off an assist from Michelle Genetin to put the hosts up 1-0.
Slippery Rock tied the game in the 74th minute when
Cailin Conner notched her first of the year from 15-yards out after taking an assist from
Allison Harbart.
Gannon wasted little time in regaining the lead, as Anna Colaizzo found a loose ball in the box off a corner kick and scored in the 76th minute to make it 2-1. Brueckner was credited with an assist on the goal.
Slippery Rock pushed hard down the stretch for the tying goal, including a shot from Conner in the final second that missed high, but could not find the equalizer.
Dana O'Neill took the loss in goal for Slippery Rock after recording one save. Sarah Geffel earned the win after recording two saves for Gannon.
The Rock posted final advantages of 15-9 in shots and 11-4 in corner kicks. Both teams were credited with three shots on target.
Slippery Rock returns to action Saturday afternoon when it hosts Mercyhurst in a PSAC game at 2 p.m. at James Egli Field.
