Rock volleyball downed in day two of PSAC crossover

The Rock volleyball team fell to Pitt-Johnstown and Shippensburg in the second day of a weekend PSAC crossover series.

JOHNSTOWN, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University volleyball team (9-17, 4-9) fell 3-2 to Pitt-Johnstown (15-6, 9-4) and 3-0 to Shippensburg (18-6, 10-3) Saturday in day two of a weekend Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference crossover.

In the opener, Pitt-Johnstown jumped out to an early 2-0 match advantage after set wins of 25-20 and 25-23. The Rock stormed back to win the third set 25-16 and the fourth set 25-19. The teams went back and forth in the fifth set before the Mountain Cats escaped with a 15-12 win to seal a 3-2 match victory.

Caroline Houston had a monster game, recording 23 kills on a .412 attack percentage. Kristy Lake had an impressive game as well, recording 17 kills on a .378 attack percentage.

Kayla Woo tallied a game-high 22 digs and Michelle Hren totaled seven blocks to lead the defensive effort for Slippery Rock.

Janna Reilly recorded 31 assists, while Alexandra Fleagle chipped in 23 assists and three of the team's eight service aces.

The Mountain Cats had three players with double digit kills, led by Marissa Erminio with 25 kills and Kelsey Shanabrook with 16 kills. Allison Mondorff recorded a game-high 55 assists in the win.

In the nightcap, the Raiders led The Rock 20-14 in the first set before Reilly served SRU to six straight points. Reilly capped off the streak with an ace after three consecutive kills from Houston to tie the set at 20-20. A timeout by Shippensburg allowed the Raiders to regain their composure and win the set 25-20.

Shippensburg jumped out to an early lead in the second and went on to win the set 25-18. The Raiders ended The Rock's hopes for a comeback with a 25-15 win in the third set to take the match 3-0.

Houston led The Rock with 13 kills, followed by Lake with six kills.

Woo had 11 digs and Reilly chipped in 17 assists and 11 digs.

The Raiders were led by Jill Edwards with 16 kills and Samantha Edwards with 8 kills. Taylor Gottshall recorded six blocks and Maria Peluso tallied three service aces.

Slippery Rock returns to PSAC-West action Saturday, Oct. 26 at Indiana (Pa.). First serve is set for 4 p.m.
