SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The California University (Pa.) women's basketball team used a 25-9 run over the final 9:14 to pull away with a 75-58 win over Slippery Rock University Wednesday evening in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division action from Morrow Field House.
The Vulcans (11-5, 7-5 PSAC), who have now won 22 consecutive games in the series between the two teams, led by 12 points early in the second half but Slippery Rock (4-12, 3-9 PSAC) chipped away at the advantage and cut it to a one point game with 9:14 to play. From there, California went on an 8-0 run to and carried that momentum to a 25-9 run to close the game.
Slippery Rock had one of its best shooting performances of the year, finishing the game at 50 percent from the field, but California capitalized on 23 Rock turnovers and converted them into 23 points for the main advantage in the game.
The Rock placed two players in double-figures, led by a career-high 18-point showing from
Alexas Brown, who also handed out four assists.
Erinne Cunningham added 14 points and
Danielle Garroutte chipped in six points and seven rebounds.
Erica Aiello handed out five assists and
D'Asia Chambers pulled down a team-high nine rebounds to cap the top performers for SRU.
Slippery Rock connected on 26-of-52 attempts from the field, including 4-of-13 from beyond the 3-point line (30.8 percent) and made a season-low two free throws on just seven trips to the line (28.6 percent).
California placed four players in double figures, led by a double-double of 16 points and 14 rebounds from Elena Antonenko. Emma Mahady added 14 points, Kate Seebohm chipped in 12 points and six assists and Ashley Hines added 10 points and nine rebounds.
The Vulcans finished the game shooting 41.0 percent from the field (31-of-74), 29.4 percent from long range (5-of-17) and 72.7 percent at the free throw line (8-of-11). The visitors managed a 40-35 rebounding advantage and turned the ball over just nine times.
Both teams struggled to score in the opening minutes as they combined for just five points in the first 6:21 of play. Once each team found its rhythm, they traded baskets until the game was notched at 11-11 with 11:23 to play in the opening period.
From there, California put together a 12-2 run to open up a 23-13 lead with 6:23 to play in the half. The visitors would push that lead out to 14 points, 38-24 at the break.
Slippery Rock opened the second half on a 9-2 run to cut the deficit to seven points, 40-33 just under three minutes into the period. The Vulcans scored the next four points to make it an 11-point game before Slippery Rock went on a 16-6 run to make it 50-49 with 9:14 to play.
California responded with its 8-0 run to regain control of the game and kept the pressure on, never allowing the hosts back into contention.
The Rock will travel to Edinboro Saturday for a PSAC West game at 1 p.m. and will return home to Morrow Field House to host Gannon next Wednesday at 6 p.m.
