Rock women host Cal U Wednesday

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. -- The Slippery Rock University women's basketball team welcomes California (Pa.) Wednesday night for a PSAC Western Division matchup. The Rock is currently in a tie for 7th in the PSAC standings, while the Vulcans sit fourth. The top six teams in each division will qualify for the playoffs this winter.

Records: Slippery Rock enters the game with a 4-11 overall record and a 3-8 mark in league games. The Rock is coming off a 60-44 loss to Mercyhurst here at Morrow Field House Saturday.

California enters the game with a 10-5 overall record and a 6-5 mark in league games. The Vulcans are riding a three-game losing streak and are coming off a 65-53 loss at Gannon Saturday.

Scouting The Rock: Slippery Rock is scoring 57.3 points per game and allowing opponents 70.1 points per game.

The Rock is shooting 34.6 percent from the field, 21.8 percent from beyond the 3-point line and 61.2 percent at the free throw line. Opponents average 40.7 percent from the field, 28.8 percent from long range and 69.1 percent at the charity stripe.

D'Asia Chambers leads the team in scoring at 10.4 points per game and adds 6.1 rebounds per game, the top number among active players.

Erinne Cunningham scores 10.0 points per game and Alexas Brown adds 8.7 points per game and leads the team in assists.  Simone Aladenoye adds 6.0 points per game and Emilee Vitez adds 3.5 points and 5.7 rebounds per game.

Scouting the Vulcans: California is scoring 67.1 points per game and allowing 59.5 points per game.

The Vulcans are shooting 38.4 percent from the field, 28.8 percent from beyond the 3-point line and 68.1 percent at the free throw line. Opponents average 38.8 percent from the field, 26.2 percent from long range and 71.1 percent at the charity stripe.

Stephanie Michael leads the team in scoring at 12.5 points per game. Ashley Hines adds 9.8 points and leads the team with 7.9 rebounds per game. Emma Mahady chips in 9.1 points per game.

Ryah Gadson adds 7.4 points and Irina Kukolj adds 7.2 points per game. Kate Seebohm leads the team and ranks second in the PSAC with 75 assists.

Series: California leads the all-time series 42-23. The Vulcans have won the last 21 consecutive games in the series. The last Slippery Rock win came at home during the 2001-02 season. Last year, California earned 67-54 and 72-64 wins.

Head Coaches: Tanya Longo is in her third season as the head coach at Slippery Rock. Longo has taken on a rebuilding project with the program and has posted a record of 13-54 in her tenure at SRU. Longo came to Slippery Rock after spending two seasons as an assistant coach at Division I Southern Illinois. Longo owns a 0-4 record in four games against Mercyhurst.

Jess Strom is in her second season as the head coach at California, where she owns a career record of 24-12. Strom was a standout player at Penn State, earning All-Conference honors for the Lady Lions. She owns a 2-0 record against Slippery Rock.

Last Meeting: (Box Score) California handed Slippery Rock a 72-64 loss at Morrow Field House Feb. 15, 2012.

D'Asia Chambers led Slippery Rock with 16 points, while Jasmine Cooper chipped in 14 and Sherita Stanley added 11.

California was led by a 21 point showing from Amy Johns, while Danielle Luckett added 13 points and Nakia DeBlanc chipped in 11 points.

Slippery Rock shot 28.0 percent in the game, while California shot 44.6 percent.

Next Up: Slippery Rock will travel to Edinboro Saturday for a 1 p.m. PSAC West tip. The Rock returns home next Wedneday to host Gannon at 6 p.m.
