SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The 10th-ranked Slippery Rock University women's soccer team remained unbeaten with a 3-0 victory over the University of Charleston Saturday in non-conference action at Mihalik-Thompson Stadium.
With the win, Slippery Rock improves to 3-0 on the season and has yet to allow a goal, outscoring opponents 9-0. Charleston drops to 0-4 with the loss.
The Rock wasted little time getting on the scoreboard with a goal in the third minute from Alexandra Brosky. Slippery Rock added a second goal in the 18th minute and held Charleston without a single shot for the opening 45 minutes to lead 2-0 at halftime.
The Rock added an insurance goal late to cap the scoring and finished the game with a 9-6 advantage in total shots. Both teams managed five shots on goal and one corner kick.
Lucy Hannon finished the game with points on every Rock goal, scoring once and picking up two assists.
Shelby Ward tallied her first goal of the season and
Lauren Impey picked up an assist to cap the SRU scorers.
Dana O'Neill earned the shutout in goal, her third of the year, after recording five saves.
Megan Bauman started in goal for Charleston and took the loss after playing the first 45 minutes, allowing two goals and recording one save. Courtney Budd played the final 45 minutes, allowing one goal and recording one save.
Brosky opened the scoring with her first collegiate goal at the 2:54 mark when she converted an assist from Hannon. Hannon played a long through ball from the wing and Brosky flipped the ball over the keeper for the score.
Hannon notched her second goal of the season in the 18th minute when she made a perfect run under a free kick from Impey and flicked the ball into the right side of the net to make it 2-0.
Ward's tally came in the 84th minute when she played a long ball up the right wing from Hannon and scored to the far post when the keeper came out to challenge.
Slippery Rock will get a short break with no mid-week game this week and will be back in action next Saturday, Sept. 15 with a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference showdown at Kutztown. Kickoff is slated for 2 p.m.
Last year, Kutztown defeated SRU in the PSAC semifinals at California. One week later, The Rock eliminated the Golden Bears from the NCAA playoffs with a second round win at Kutztown.
