SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The 10th-ranked Slippery Rock University women's soccer team tallied four second half goals en route to a run away 5-0 win over Mercyhurst Wednesday in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference action from Egli Field.
The Rock, which moved up four places in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America rankings this week to No. 10 in Division II, posted its second win and second shutout of the season to improve to 2-0-0 and 1-0-0 in PSAC action. Mercyhurst dropped its first match of the year and falls to 2-1-0 overall and 0-1-0 in league play.
Slippery Rock came out of the gates slow and needed a long strike from defender
Izabel Scott to break the scoreless tie in the 34th minute. The Rock stormed out of the gates in the second half, pouring four goals in and never really allowing the Lakers with a solid scoring chance.
Slippery Rock finished the game with advantages of 16-14 in total shots, 8-5 in shots on goal and 7-6 in corner kicks. The hosts also saw valuable minutes out of many reserves with 20 total players seeing the field.
Stephanie Buckenheimer and
Caitlin Binder were the stars of the game for SRU, as Buckenheimer tallied two goals and handed out one assist and Binder notched three assists. Scott,
Lucy Hannon and
Lauren Impey all found the back of the net and
Leslie Henny added an assist to cap The Rock scorers.
Dana O'Neill rewarded herself with a birthday shutout, stopping all five shots on target to earn the win in goal for Slippery Rock. Ellie McDougall, last week's PSAC Player of the Week, took the loss after allowing three goals and recording three saves in 73:23. She was relieved in the 74th minute by Brooke Morrison, who allowed the final two goals.
Scott kicked off the scoring in the 34th minute when she took a pass from Henny and beat McDougall with a long shot from the right corner of the box into the left side of the net.
The 1-0 margin stood until less than five minutes into the second half when Hannon scored with a line drive into the left side of the net off a long cross from Binder at 49:38.
Buckenheimer converted on back to back assists from Binder in the 68th and 75th minutes, the first coming on a three-on-two breakaway and the second being a header off a long cross, that put Slippery Rock up 4-0.
Impey capped the scoring when she scored through traffic off a Buckenheimer corner kick in the 89th minute.
All 20 Slippery Rock players that saw the field played at least 11 minutes.
Slippery Rock will play its second consecutive home game Saturday when the University of Charleston visits Egli Field for a 1 p.m. non-conference match. The Rock returns to PSAC action Sept. 15 with a road game at Kuztown.
