SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University women's soccer team dropped a 2-0 decision to Shippensburg University Saturday in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference action at James Egli Field.
Slippery Rock, playing on no rest after a double overtime match against California yesterday, allowed two goals in the final 10 minutes as the Raiders earned the edge late in the match.
With the loss, Slippery Rock drops to 6-3 overall and 3-3 in PSAC action. Shippensburg improves to 4-4-3 overall and 2-4-2 in league games.
The Raiders finished the game with advantages of 5-4 in shots on goal and 4-2 in corner kicks. Slippery Rock posted an 11-9 advantage in total shots.
Things were nearly even in a back and forth game for the opening 45 minutes, with neither team able to capitalize on its chances. Shippensburg finished the half with a 7-4 edge in total shots and a 2-0 edge in corner kicks.
Slippery Rock flipped the field for the first 30 minutes of the second half and posted a 7-2 edge in shots and matched the Raiders with two corner kicks each in the period, but the visitors were able to capitalize on their only shots of the half.
Katie Leverentz scored the game's first goal when she played a through ball from Kate Zech off the breakaway and beat Rock keeper
Dana O'Neill in the 81st minute.
The Raiders added an insurance tally in the 83rd minute when Zech found the back of the net on the far post after taking a pass in traffic from Leverentz.
Shelbie Rackley earned the win in goal for Shippensburg with four saves. O'Neill took the loss and finished with three saves.
Slippery Rock is back in action Wednesday when it welcomes Bloomsburg to Egli Field for a 1 p.m. PSAC match.
