Rock women host pair of weekend games

Slippery Rock will welcome California and Shippensburg for a pair of PSAC matches this weekend at Egli Field.

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University women's soccer team will host a pair of home matches this weekend when it welcomes California University (Pa.) for a 3:30 p.m. match Friday and Shippensburg for a 1 p.m. match Saturday.

Scouting The Rock: Slippery Rock enters the weekend with a 6-1-0 overall record and sits at 3-1 in the PSAC standings.

The Rock is led by Lucy Hannon with four goals and three assists, while Shelby Ward has added three goals and Stephanie Buckenheimer has two goals and two assists. Kara Mullins has two goals and one assist and Caitlin Binder has four assists to cap the leading scorers. SRU is outscoring opponents 16-5 and outshooting the opposition by a 75-57 margin. The Rock has allowed just 25 shots on goal.

Dana O'Neill has played every minute in goal for SRU and is 6-1 with five shutouts, a goals against average of 0.71 and a save percentage of .800.

Scouting the Vulcans: California enters the weekend with a 6-2 overall record and is tied with SRU at 3-1 in the PSAC standings.

California was ranked No. 20 in last week's national rankings before dropping out after a loss at West Chester. The Vulcans and enter the weekend outscoring opponents 23-5 with a 160-53 advantage in total shots. Haley Henderson leads the team with six goals and one assist, followed by Erin Hogan with two goals and eight assists. Janelle McCann has added four goals and one assist and Chelsea Crockett has four goals. Kayla Russo and Bethany Smyda each have two goals to cap the top scorers. A total of 13 players have recorded at least one point.

Ashley Magruda has started seven of eight games for Cal and is 5-2 with two shutouts. She has allowed four goals for a 0.55 GAA and has made 25 saves for a .862 save percentage.

Scouting the Raiders: Shippensburg enters Friday's game at Lock Haven with a 3-3-3 overall record and a 1-3-2 mark in conference games. The Raiders are 2-1-2 against teams that Slippery Rock has played this year, while The Rock is 4-1 against those teams.

Entering the weekend, Shippensburg is being outscored 13-7 and outshot 162-118 on the year. Rhonda Runion leads the team with three goals and one assist, followed by Katie Leverentz with one goal and one assist. Ashley Vellucci, Carolyn Smith and Olivia Snare each have one goal and Rachel Hess has one assist to cap all scorers.

Shelbie Rackley had started every game in goal for the Raiders. She owned a 3-3-3 record with two shutouts, a goals against average of 1.28 and a save percentage of .824 after making 56 saves.

Head Coaches: Noreen Herlihy is in her 18th season at the helm of the Slippery Rock program. She has led the team to 16 consecutive winning seasons with 10 or more wins and owns a career record of 217-98-24. The 16 consecutive winning seasons rank eighth all-time in Division II history. Herlihy is a 1992 graduate of Mercyhurst College with a bachelor's degree in sports medicine. She also owns a master's degree in sports administration from Slippery Rock.

Gene Smith is in his first season as the head coach at California after serving as an assistant with the program for the previous two years. He was an integral piece of the coaching staff that saw the team go undefeated in the regular season in 2011. As a member of the staff, he helped oversee a 38-2-6 run during the 2010 and 2011 seasons. Smith is a graduate of Norwich University.

Rob Fulton is in his seventh season as the head coach at Shippensburg, where he has averaged more than eight wins a year during his tenure. He also spent time as the assistant coach for the men's team at Shippensburg. Fulton is a graduate of Graceland College.

SRU-Cal Series: Slippery Rock holds a 17-8-2 advantage in the all-time series, but California has had the upper hand lately. The Vulcans eliminated SRU from the NCAA Playoffs in each of the last two years, including a 2-0 defeat in the Round of 16 last season when Cal was ranked No. 2 in the nation and SRU was ranked No. 23.

SRU-Ship Series: Slippery Rock holds a 9-5-1 advantage in the series, including a 1-0 win at Shippensburg last season, despite the Raiders posting an 18-7 edge in shots and a 9-2 advantage in corner kicks. Dana O'Neill earned the shutout with eight saves for SRU.
