Ward nets winner in final minute at Clarion

Clarion erased a 2-0 deficit late in the second half, but Shelby Ward shut the door on the comeback with a breakaway goal with 52 seconds to play to lift SRU to a 3-2 win.

CLARION, Pa.Shelby Ward scored with 52 seconds remaining in regulation to thwart a comeback attempt and lead the Slippery Rock University women's soccer team to a 3-2 win on the road at Clarion University in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference action Saturday.

Slippery Rock led 1-0 at halftime and increased that margin to 2-0 in the 59th minute before the hosts mounted a comeback, scoring in the 66th minute and tying the game in the 87th minute. Ward stole the momentum back just over three minutes after the tying goal, beating two defenders down the field on a breakaway and tallying the winner at the 89:08 mark.

With the win, Slippery Rock improves to 5-1 overall and 3-1 in PSAC play. Clarion drops to 1-4-2 overall and 1-4 in league action.

The Rock finished the game with advantages of 12-9 in total shots and 4-2 in corner kicks. Each team was credited with seven shots on goal.

Dana O'Neill earned the win in goal for Slippery Rock, allowing two goals and recording two saves. Laura Saussol took the loss, allowing three goals and recording four saves.

After nearly 40 minutes of scoreless play to open the game, Cailin Conner put Slippery Rock on the board when she scored off an assist from Lucy Hannon at the 39:55 mark to send it to the break with SRU up 1-0.

Hannon found the back of the net for herself in the 59th minute to give Slippery Rock a 2-0 lead.

Kathleen Warner cut into that lead when she scored off an assist from Casey Harsch in the 66th minute and Cassaundra Soars converted an assist from Harsch at the 86:02 mark to tie the game and set up the dramatic finish.

Slippery Rock is back in action Monday when it travels to West Virginia Wesleyan for an Atlantic Region showdown. Kickoff is set for 2 p.m.
