KUTZTOWN, Pa. – The fifth-ranked Slippery Rock University women's soccer team suffered its first loss of the season Saturday, falling 3-1 at Kutztown University in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference action.
The Rock (3-1, 1-1 PSAC) opened the game's scoring with a goal from
Kara Mullins late in the first half, but the Golden Bears (4-2, 3-0 PSAC) scored three times in the first 15 minutes of the second half to put the game out of reach.
Saturday's game was a tale of two halves, with both teams recording four shots in the opening period and Slippery Rock notching the lone goal. Kutztown took over in the second half, holding The Rock without a single shot to post a 9-0 edge in shots, along with a 5-0 edge in corner kicks.
Mullins goal was assisted by
Caitlin Binder, who picked up her team leading fourth assist on the play.
Dana O'Neill took the loss in goal, allowing three goals and recording one save.
Kutztown's leading performer was Sam Costello, who tallied two goals and added an assist. Diana Malanga scored the opening goal and assisted the second goal and BrieAnn Shipkowski notched an assist for the hosts.
Casey Behrendt earned the win in goal, allowing one goal and recording no saves.
Kutztown finished the game with advantages of 14-3 in total shots, 4-1 in shots on goal and 9-2 in corner kicks.
Mullins opened the scoring with a header off a cross from Binder at the 42:00 mark to send it to the break with SRU leading 1-0.
Malanga evened the game when she scored with a header in the 49th minute off an assist from Costello. Costello put the hosts on top for good with a header in the 56th minute after playing a cross from Mananga and added an insurance tally in the 60th minute with another header, this time off the foot of Shipkowski.
Slippery Rock will return to action Wednesday when it hosts Indiana (Pa.) in a PSAC matchup at Egli Field. Kickoff is set for 4 p.m.
