WHEELING, W. Va. – The 14th-ranked Slippery Rock University women's soccer team opened its 2012 season with a 1-0 victory on the road at Wheeling Jesuit in non-conference action Thursday night.
The Rock dominated possession throughout the game and held the Cardinals to just one shot on goal, three total shots and no corner kicks.
The lone goal of the game came in the 14th minute when freshman
Crysta Ganter found the back of the net off an assist from
Stephanie Buckenheimer to tally her first collegiate goal.
Slippery Rock finished the game with advantages of 12-3 in total shots, 5-1 in shots on goal and 9-0 in corner kicks.
Dana O'Neill earned the shutout in goal for SRU, recording one save. Holly Kraus took the loss for Wheeling Jesuit, allowing one goal and recording four saves.
The Rock's starting lineup featured five newcomers and three true freshmen. Transfers
Brittany Boss and
Leslie Henny both started on defense, and freshmen
Cailin Conner and
Allison Harbart joined Ganter in the starting lineup.
SRU used a total of 16 players in the game, while Wheeling Jesuit made just three substitutions.
Slippery Rock will return to action Wednesday, Sept. 5 when it opens the home and Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference portions of its schedule. Mercyhurst will be the scheduled opponent for the 4 p.m. kickoff at Jim Egli Field.
