EAST STROUDSBURG, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University softball team combined timely offense with two solid pitching performances to sweep East Stroudsburg Saturday in doubleheader action. SRU won game one 2-1 and game two 5-1.
The non-conference wins, which stretched The Rock's current win streak to three games, improved Slippery Rock's record to 11-12 overall. East Stroudsburg fell to 9-22 on the season with the defeats.
Junior catcher
Katie Saluga led Slippery Rock to the victories by going a combined 3-for-6 on the day with four RBI and one double. Saluga has now reached base safely in 15 consecutive games and is currently batting .344. In addition to picking up the win in game one, senior pitcher
Shaylee Ianno also recorded two extra-base hits on the day, a double and a home run.
Slippery Rock's first victory of the day was a come-from behind effort. Trailing 1-0 in the fifth inning, SRU's comeback started when freshman outfielder
Alaynna Beers drew a walk and quickly advanced to second base off of a wild pitch. Sophomore outfielder
Emily Lobdell proceeded to advance Beers to third with a single, which allowed Saluga to bring her home, and tie the game at 1-1, with a sacrifice fly to right field.
The Rock added the game-deciding run in the sixth inning when
Lori Beth Nunemaker, who was called on to pinch run after Ianno walked to lead off the inning, scored thanks to an East Stroudsburg error.
The two runs were all Ianno needed. After surrendering one run in the fourth inning, Ianno gave up just one hit in the final three innings to secure the 2-1 victory. For the game, Ianno gave up just three hits while striking out six ESU batters to improve her record to 7-6 on the season.
Slippery Rock wasted little time in game two as the offense rattled off all five of its runs in the second inning. The onslaught was started with a leadoff home run from Ianno, her second of the season. Later in the inning and with the bases loaded, senior short stop
Kirsten Brant scored to put SRU ahead 2-0. With the bases still loaded, Saluga came through with a double to center field that drove in three runs to give The Rock a commanding 5-0 lead.
A five-run lead was more than enough for freshman pitcher
Ashley Knight (4-5), who struck out eight batters in the game while scattering five hits on the way to her fourth victory of the season.
For the game, Saluga went 2-for-4 with three RBI while Ianno, Brant, Knight, Lobdell, sophomore first baseman
Breanna Tongel and junior third baseman
Jenna Geibel each recorded one hit.
Saturday's wins marked the first doubleheader-sweep SRU has had over a team this season.
Slippery Rock will return to competition 2:30 p.m. Tuesday at Clarion.
