ERIE, Pa. – Junior third baseman Jenna Geibel hit her eighth and ninth home runs of the season Saturday, but the Slippery Rock University softball team was unable to knock off Edinboro in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference-Western Division doubleheader action. Edinboro defeated SRU 7-6 and 6-2.

The losses eliminate SRU from PSAC playoff contention and drops The Rock's record to 13-16 overall and 2-10 in the PSAC-West. Edinboro improved to 16-16 overall and 6-8 in the PSAC-West.

Geibel finished the day a combined 5-for-8 at the plate with two home runs, three RBI and three runs scored. Freshman outfielder Alaynna Beers went 2-for-6 and was the only other Rock player with a multi-hit afternoon. Beers has now reached base in nine consecutive games.

Game one was a close back-and-forth contest. Geibel led SRU in the opener with a 4-for-4, two-RBI performance. The four-hit game was the first for a Slippery Rock player this season.

SRU registered three hits in the top of the first inning and scored the day's first run when senior designated player Stephanie Collenette dropped in a single that allowed junior catcher Katie Saluga to score. The lead would not last long though. Rock senior pitcher Shaylee Ianno had her worst outing of the season, lasting just one inning and giving up three runs to turn the lead back over to Edinboro at 3-1.

Slippery Rock battled back to tie the game with a two-run third inning thanks to a Geibel home run that plated Saluga, who had led off the inning with a walk. Slippery Rock finished off its comeback and took what seemed like a safe 6-3 lead in the sixth inning by scoring three runs off of an Edinboro fielding error.

Slippery Rock loaded bases with no outs in the top of the seventh inning after Saluga, senior outfielder Natalie Atkinson and Geibel all reached base, but came away with no runs when a fly out by Collenette resulted in a rare triple play; Saluga left third base early and Atkinson was caught trying to tag-up and advance to third base. The lack of runs would prove to be costly.

While The Rock's bats were busy scoring six runs, freshman pitcher Ashley Knight, who took over for Ianno after the first inning, was quieting Edinboro's offense. For five innings, Knight held the Fighting Scots scoreless and allowed only five hits while striking out four batters. However, in the bottom of the seventh inning SRU's luck took a turn for the worse and Edinboro was able to score four unearned runs including a walk-off single by Jamie VanDamia that scored the game's final two runs to give EU the 7-6 win.

Slippery Rock's offense struggled in game two, finishing with just three hits in a 6-2 loss. The three hits were the second-fewest hits in a game by SRU this season.

Geibel once again started strong by blasting another home run in the top of the first inning to put the Green and White up 1-0. However, the lead would be short lived as the Fighting Scots posted one run in their half of the first inning and three more in the second inning to take a 4-1 lead.

Senior shortstop Kirsten Brant scored off of an error in the fifth inning to pull The Rock to within two runs at 4-2, but Edinboro's Kari Falk (7-8) continued to pitch effectively and did not allow SRU to get any closer. Edinboro added two more insurance runs in the sixth inning on the way to its 6-2 victory.

Beers and freshman infielder Taylor Welch registered The Rock's other two hits in game two. Welch's hit was the first of her career. Knight started game two and gave up nine hits six runs (five earned) while striking out five batters in 5.2 innings of work to fall to 4-8 on the year.

Slippery Rock will remain on the road for four more games, starting with a 3 p.m. doubleheader at Clarion on Tuesday.
