SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University softball team dropped a pair of Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference-Western Division games to Edinboro University Friday. SRU lost game one 6-4 before falling in the nightcap, 7-1.
The losses drop The Rock's record to 7-8 overall and 0-2 in the PSAC-West. Edinboro improved to 12-8 overall and 2-2 in the PSAC-West.
Junior third baseman
Jenna Geibel went 4-for-7 on the day with two RBI to lead The Rock. Senior outfielder
Gina Brenzo and junior catcher
Katie Saluga both registered two hits in the two games and were the only other SRU players other than Geibel to have at least two hits on the day.
In the bottom of the first inning of game one, senior outfielder
Natalie Atkinson moved Brenzo over to third base with a sacrifice bunt that then enabled Geibel to bring her the rest of the way home with an RBI-single, giving Slippery Rock a 1-0 lead on the Fighting Scots.
However, the lead would be short lived as Edinboro quickly rebounded to take the lead thanks to a two-run home run in the third inning by Jamie VanDamia. Edinboro extended its lead an inning later by adding three more runs to take a decisive 5-1 lead over Slippery Rock.
The Rock trimmed the deficit to just two runs (5-3) in the fifth inning thanks to RBI-hits from Geibel and Saluga. Slippery Rock's comeback bid would stall and the two teams traded runs in the seventh inning leading to Edinboro's 6-4 victory.
Senior pitcher
Shaylee Ianno (5-3) took the loss for SRU in game one, giving up six runs and nine hits while striking out eight batters in the defeat. Amanda Shields earned the win for Edinboro to improve her record to 7-4 on the season.
Slippery Rock couldn't force a split with Edinboro as the Fighting Scots jumped out to a 6-0 lead after three innings of play in game two en route to the 7-1 victory.
Senior short stop
Kirsten Brant was responsible for SRU's only run in game two when sophomore first baseman
Breanna Tongel scored after Brant ripped a double. Slippery Rock's offense was shut down by Edinboro pitcher Kari Falk (5-4) for the remainder of the game.
Brant finished the game 1-for-3. Geibel, Saluga, freshman outfielder
Alaynna Beers and freshman pitcher
Ashley Knight were responsible for The Rock's other four hits.
Junior pitcher
Amy Erickson (0-1) made her first start of the season, allowing five runs on five hits and three walks. Knight came on in relief of Erickson and threw five innings, giving up just two runs and striking out six batters.
Slippery Rock will look to rebound and take a pair of games against Gannon Saturday at the SRU Softball Field. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
