KISSIMMEE, Fla. – The Slippery Rock University softball team began its season with a 5-2 win over Minnesota State-Moorhead Sunday at the Rebel Spring Games in Kissimmee, Fla.

The Rock (1-0) posted two runs in the third, one in the fourth and two in the sixth while the Dragons were held scoreless until they registered two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. The contest was halted in the top of the seventh inning due to inclement weather.

Senior pitcher Shaylee Ianno (1-0), the 2011 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference-Western Division Pitcher of the Year, picked up the win after striking out four batters over six innings. In addition to her performance in the circle, Ianno also helped her own cause at the plate with a two-run double in the sixth inning.

Junior third baseman Jenna Geibel drove in the first runs of the season for The Rock when she belted a two-run home run in the third inning. Geibel, a two-time All-PSAC-West selection, finished the game 1-for-3 from the plate with two RBI.

Sophomore Emily Lobdell scored on a passed ball in the fourth inning to put The Rock up 3-0. Ianno's two-run double in the sixth then gave SRU a 5-0 lead before Minnesota-Moorhead was finally able to get to Ianno with two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. However, the Dragons comeback attempt was halted when the game was called in the top of the seventh inning due to rain, giving SRU the 5-2 victory.

Also adding to the Slippery Rock offense on Sunday was senior outfielder Gina Brenzo, who went 2-for-4 with a single and a double.

Slippery Rock was scheduled to play Lake Erie after its win over Minnesota-Moorhead, but the game was canceled due to the weather. No makeup date has been set.

Weather permitting; Slippery Rock will play two games Monday starting at 1 p.m. against Minnesota-Duluth followed by a 5 p.m. contest vs. Southwest Minnesota State.
