SLIPPERY ROCK,
Pa. – The Slippery Rock University women's basketball team closed the 2011-12 season with a 71-63 win over Clarion in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division action Saturday at Morrow Field House.
The Rock led wire-to-wire in the second half en route to snapping an 11 game losing streak. Slippery Rock finishes the season with a 6-20 overall record and a 3-19 mark in the PSAC. Clarion ends its season with a 7-19 overall record and a 6-16 record in the conference.
Slippery Rock placed four players in double figures, led by
Danielle Smith with a double-double of 14 points and 15 rebounds.
Jasmine Cooper added 18 points, while
Paris Thomas chipped in 12 points and
Erinne Cunningham had 11 points.
The Rock finished the game shooting 36.8 percent from the field, hitting 28-of-76 attempts, including 7-of-31 from long range (22.6 percent) and were 57.1 percent from the free throw line (8-of-14).
Hannah Heeter's double-double of 21 points and 15 rebounds led the way for Clarion. Raven Jones added a game-high 23 points, while Lauren Savulchak chipped in 11 points.
The Golden Eagles shot 42.9 percent from the field, hitting 27-of-63 shots. They made 1-of-10 from beyond the 3-point arc (10 percent) and were 44.4 percent from the free throw line (8-of-18).
The Rock came out of the gates strong, scoring the first six points of the game. And managing to post a five point advantage at halftime, 34-29. The halftime lead was the first for Slippery Rock in its last eight games. Before Saturday, the last halftime lead for SRU was Jan. 28 against Indiana (Pa.).
Slippery Rock pushed the lead out to 11 points, 40-29, with 18:17 to play in the second half. Clarion responded with a 6-0 run to cut the score to 52-49 at the 11:46 mark and with 2:21 to play cut the deficit to three, but the Rock would score five unanswered points over the final two minutes to seal the win.
Saturday's game marked the final game for Slippery Rock's three seniors,

Shannon Lee and
Sherita Stanley, who were honored in a pregame ceremony.
