SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa.- The Slippery Rock University women's basketball team dropped its ninth straight game Wednesday night, falling 72-64 to California (Pa.) in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division action from Morrow Field House.
The Rock managed to outscore the Vulcans 48-39 in the second half, but could not overcome a 33-16 halftime deficit. The loss drops Slippery Rock's record to 5-18 overall and 2-17 in PSAC play. California improves to a 15-8 overall record and 12-7 in the conference standings.
Wednesday night's game was the annual breast cancer awareness game, titled Hooping for a Cure. More than $300 was raised to benefit the Kay Yow Cancer Fund.
D'Asia Chambers tied her career-high with 16 points to go along with six rebounds to lead The Rock.
Jasmine Cooper added 14 points and
Sherita Stanley chipped in 11 points. Emily Vitez added a career-high 10 rebounds off the bench.
Slippery Rock finished the game shooting 43.1 percent from the field, connecting on 25-of-58 attempts. The Rock struggled from long range and shot 20.8 percent, hitting only 5-of-24 attempts from beyond the 3-point arc. SRU was 9-of-14 at the free throw line (64.3 percent) and posted a distinct 43-30 advantage in total rebounds.
California was led by Amy Johns with 21 points, while Danielle Luckett added 13 points and six rebounds.
The Vulcans shot 44.6 percent from the field, hitting 25-of-56 shots and also struggled from long range, hitting just 1-of-11 attempts (9.1 percent). California was 21-of-34 (61.8 percent) at the free throw line.
The visitors came out on fire scoring the first 13 points of the game and keeping The Rock from off the scoreboard until the 14:25 mark. SRU would continue to struggle for the rest of the half, hitting only 7-of-25 from the field and missing all 11 attempts from 3-point range as the Vulcans posted a 33-16 halftime lead.
Starting the second half, California pushed the lead to 22 on four separate occasions, with the last coming at the 15:54 mark, 46-25. Slippery Rock put together a 6-0 run to make the score 46-32, but California would eventually push the lead back out to 20 points.
The Rock started to chip away at the deficit in the last six minutes and narrowed the California lead to just seven points, 69-62, with 1:53 to play, but neither team could muster much offense over the final two minutes and the Vulcans held on for the 72-64 win.
Slippery Rock will look to snap its current losing skid when it travels to No. 21 Indiana University (Pa.) this Saturday. Tip is set for 5:30 p.m.
