Rock women open PSAC play at #25 Bloomsburg, Mansfield

Slippery Rock will open the PSAC portion of its schedule this weekend with crossover games at No. 25 Bloomsburg Saturday and Mansfield Sunday.

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University women's basketball team will open Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference action with a pair of crossover games on the road this weekend.

The Rock will travel to No. 25 Bloomsburg University Saturday and visit Mansfield University Sunday. Game time for both games is 1 p.m.

The Records: Slippery Rock brings a 1-2 record into the weekend after winning the season opener at home over Urbana, 89-87, before dropping road games at Charleston (93-76) and Wheeling Jesuit (59-56).

Bloomsburg is 3-0 and entered the national rankings at the No. 25 spot this week after defeating Chestnut Hill (84-54), Lincoln (74-71 in double OT) and Wilmington (96-55).

Mansfield is 1-1 entering the weekend and will host Edinboro Saturday while Slippery Rock plays at Bloomsburg. The Mountaineers dropped an 82-44 decision to Lock Haven in the opener and defeated Houghton 79-52.

Scouting The Rock: Slippery Rock is looking to snap a two-game losing streak and open the conference portion of the schedule on the right foot. The Rock is averaging 73.7 points per game and allowing 79.7 points per game.

Slippery Rock has four players averaging double digit scoring efforts, led by D'Asia Chambers' per game averages of 18.3 points and 7.3 rebounds. Alexas Brown is averaging 14 points per game and has 18 assists. Erinne Cunningham has added 12 points per game and Danielle Garroutte is averaging 11 points per game off the bench. Jazmyne Frost is the top rebounder on the team with an 8.7 board per game average.

The Rock is shooting 40.6 percent from the field, 36.5 percent from beyond the 3-point line and 51.7 percent from the free throw line. Opponents are shooting 42.4 percent from the field, 35.3 percent from long range and 75.8 percent from the charity stripe.

Scouting the Huskies: Bloomsburg has averaged 84.7 points per game through three games while allowing just 60.0 points per game. The Huskies are shooting 41.2 percent from the field, 29.5 percent from long range and 69.1 percent from the free throw line. They hold opponents to 33.9 percent from the field, 32.7 percent from 3-point land and 49.4 percent from the free throw line.

Bloomsburg has three players averaging double digits led by Dana Wieller's 15.0 points per game average. Lauren Ellis adds 14.3 points and 8.3 rebounds per game and Kayla Oxenrider chips in 10.7 points. Catherine Noack leads the team with 10 assists and fellow starting guard Alussa Flanagan has recorded seven steals.

Scouting the Mountaineers: Mansfield is scoring 61.5 points per game and allowing 67.0 points per game. The Mounties are shooting 39.8 percent from the floor, 38.9 percent from beyond the 3-point arc and 78.9 percent at the free throw line. Opponents shoot 40.5 percent from the field, 25.0 percent from long range and 63.0 percent at the charity stripe.

Julia Stevenson has been the only dominant scorer on the floor in both of the team's games, averaging 18.5 points and 10.0 rebounds per game. She is the only player on the team that has made more than six shots from the field this season. Jena Matter adds 8.0 points and 7.0 rebounds per game. Katie Fitzpatrick (7.5 ppg) and Shaleta Heyward (7.0 ppg) round out the top scorers.

Head Coaches: Tanya Longo is in her third season as the head coach at Slippery Rock. Longo has taken on a rebuilding project with the program and has posted a record of 10-45 in her tenure at SRU. Longo came to Slippery Rock after spending two seasons as an assistant coach at Division I Southern Illinois.

Bill Cleary is in his fifth season as the head coach at Bloomsburg, where he has posted a record of 78-39 and has led the Huskies to three appearances in the conference playoffs. Before coaching Bloomsburg, he was the head coach at Wilmington for five years.

Alison Tagliaferri is in her first season as the head coach at Mansfield after spending last season as an assistant coach at West Chester. Tagliaferri is the school's all-time leading scorer and a member of the Mansfield Athletics Hall of Fame. She scored 1,795 points and grabbed 852 rebounds during her career at Mansfield.

Series Records: Slippery Rock owns a 12-11 edge in the all-time series with Bloomsburg, but the Huskies have had the upper hand lately, winning the crossover in each of the last two seasons. The last SRU win in the series came during the 2007-08 season.

Slippery Rock owns a 10-4 edge in the all-time series against Mansfield, but the Mountaineers have the most recent win after defeating SRU last season in the crossover.

Last SRU-Bloomsburg Meeting: (Box Score) Bloomsburg handed Slippery Rock an 86-67 loss at the Huskies' Nelson Field House Dec. 9, 2011 in PSAC crossover action.

Kelsey Gallagher led all scorers with 21 points to pace five BU players in double figures. Kayla Oxenrider added 17 points, Dana Wieller chipped in 13 points and Alyssa Flanagan and Lauren Ellis each added 10 points.

Slippery Rock was led by an 18-point effort from Jasmine Cooper, who also finished with 10 rebounds. Erinne Cunningham scored 17 points, Danielle Smith added 14 and Sherita Stanley chipped in with 11.

Last SRU-Mansfield Meeting: (Box Score) Mansfield earned an 88-66 win at Decker Gymnasium in Mansfield Dec. 10, 2011 in PSAC crossover action.

The Mountaineers had five players in double figures, led by 16-point showings from Mallory Moore and Jena Matter. Julia Stevenson added 15 points, Marrysa Moyer chipped in 14 and Kayla Espigh added 12.

Slippery Rock had just two players in double figures, led by 14 points from Danielle Smith and 13 points from Sherita Stanley.

Next Up: The Rock will play its first PSAC Western Division game, although the crossovers do count toward the league standings, when they visit Clarion next Saturday, Dec. 8, for a 1 p.m. tip. Slippery Rock returns home Dec. 18 and Dec. 19 to host West Chester and Cheyney in PSAC crossover games. Tip is set for 5:30 p.m. for each game.
