WEST CHESTER, Pa. – The second-ranked and undefeated West Chester University women's soccer team rallied from a 1-0 deficit to tie Slippery Rock University late in regulation and completed the comeback with a game-winner in the eighth minute of overtime Tuesday afternoon.
Emer Flatley scored on a penalty kick attempt in the 67th minute to put Slippery Rock up 1-0, but West Chester found the tying goal in the 79th minute to send the game to overtime and scored the game-winning in the 98th minute to remain unbeaten.
Slippery Rock drops to 7-4-1 overall and 4-4-1 in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference games. West Chester improves to 11-0-1 overall and 8-0-1 in PSAC action.
West Chester looked like the superior team in the opening half, posting an 8-2 edge in shots, but the Golden Rams could not solve Rock keeper
Dana O'Neill, who made five saves in the period to keep it scoreless after 45 minutes.
In a tale of two halves, Slippery Rock took over coming out of the break. The Rock posted advantages of 8-3 in total shots, 4-1 in shots on goal and 3-2 in corner kicks in the second 45 minutes.
The momentum swung all the way to the Slippery Rock side in the 67th minute after a foul was called on West Chester in the box. Flatley beat Golden Ram keeper Shannon Fedyk with the penalty attempt to make it 1-0 at the 66:53 mark.
From there, both teams traded chances and after back-to-back Slippery Rock shots from
Shelby Ward and
Lucy Hannon were saved, the Golden Rams capitalized on the other end of the field. Melissa McKeary scored her seventh goal of the year off an assist from Cara Deola at 78:13 to even the game at 1-1.
Slippery Rock pushed the tempo, earning two corner kicks over the final 10 minutes of regulation, but could not manage a shot on target.
Hannon came out of the gates firing in the overtime period, sailing a shot high just 30 seconds in for what would be The Rock's lone chance in the extra session.
Jen Hutchinson ended the game at the 97:50 mark when she scored her fourth goal of the season after taking a pass from McKeary on a two-on-one breakaway and scoring into the left side of the net.
West Chester finished the game with advantages of 13-11 in total shots, 7-5 in shots on goal and 8-3 in corner kicks.
O'Neill made five saves in the loss for Slippery Rock, while Fedyk made four saves in net to pick up the win for West Chester.
Slippery Rock will return home to host Millersville Saturday in a PSAC match at 3:30 p.m. That game will also serve as the annual Coins for Cancer game, as well as Senior Day.
