EAST STROUDSBURG, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University women's soccer team settled for a 1-1 double overtime tie at East Stroudsburg Saturday night in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference action.
The Rock scored early and maintained a 1-0 lead until the 59th minute when the Warriors event the match. Slippery Rock saw its chance at a win slip through its fingers in the 88th minute when
Stephanie Buckenheimer's penalty kick attempt sailed high, sending the match to overtime.
Both teams had chances in the extra sessions, but Rock keeper
Dana O'Neill made one save and East Stroudsburg keeper Brittain Wagner made three saves to preserve the tie.
The draw is Slippery Rock's first tie of the season and moves the team to 7-3-1 overall and 4-3-1 in PSAC play. East Stroudsburg sees its fourth tie of the year to move to 5-2-4 overall and 4-1-3 in league action.
Shelby Ward opened the game's scoring in the 16th minute when she scored her fourth goal of the season off a double assist from
Izabel Scott and
Lucy Hannon to make it 1-0 Slippery Rock.
Madeline DeVico notched the equalizer in the 59th minute off an assist from Sammi Jo Hughes to tie the game at 1-1 and set up the finish.
Slippery Rock finished the match with advantages of 16-13 in total shots and 8-5 in shots on goal. East Stroudsburg posted a 4-3 edge in corner kicks.
O'Neill made four saves in earning the tie for Slippery Rock, while Wagner was forced to make seven saves to earn the draw for the Warriors.
Slippery Rock will make another long trip east Tuesday when it travels to No. 4 West Chester for a 3:30 p.m. match.
