ERIE, Pa.—The Slippery Rock University women's soccer team suffered a 2-1 setback Wednesday evening at No. 24 Gannon University in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference action.
With the loss, Slippery Rock drops to 9-5-2 overall and 6-5-2 in PSAC games. Gannon improves to 12-3-1 overall and 9-3-1 in PSAC matches. The loss also ensures that Slippery Rock will be on the road for the opening round of the PSAC playoffs next Wednesday. Slippery Rock will likely be the No. 7 seed and travel to the No. 2 seed, which is currently California (Pa.). Final seedings will be set after Saturday's matches.
Slippery Rock had multiple chances and at times was dominant in possession Wednesday night, as evidenced by the 7-1 advantage in corner kicks earned by The Rock.
Gannon finished the game with advantages of 11-9 in total shots and 7-5 in shots on goal.
The Golden Knights struck first in the 23rd minute when Amanda Gallant scored her first goal of the season off a double assist from Kaitlyn Kissell and Mani Brueckner. The 1-0 margin stood until halftime with the hosts posted a 5-3 edge in shots in the opening period.
Slippery Rock put together a stretch of three straight corner kicks and got shots on all three early in the second half, but Gannon keeper Maggie Brinkman made two saves and the one shot that got past her was kicked away from the goal line by a defender.
Gannon made it 2-0 in the 79th minute when Michelle Genetin notched her sixth of the year off an assist from Kissell.
Slippery Rock responded immediately when
Lauren Impey found the net with a header off a crossing pass from
Emer Flatley in the 81st minute to cut the deficit to 2-1, but The Rock could not find the equalizer down the stretch.
Dana O'Neill made four saves in goal for SRU, while Brinkman was credited with three saves for Gannon.
Slippery Rock will close the regular season Saturday with a 2:30 p.m. match at Lock Haven.
