EDINBORO, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University women's soccer team clinched a berth in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference playoffs with a 1-1 double overtime tie Saturday at Edinboro.
It looked as if Slippery Rock would come away with three points and vault into a position where a home playoff game was likely when The Rock's
Crysta Ganter tallied a goal as the final horn sounded, but the referees determined the ball crossed the goal line after the clock hit zero, sending the game to overtime.
With the tie, Slippery Rock moves to 9-4-2 overall and 6-4-2 in PSAC play. Edinboro, which has already clinched a playoff berth as well, moves to 10-3-2 overall and 7-3-2 in league games.
Combined with the other results from Saturday, the one point was all SRU needed to secure a berth in the conference playoffs. SRU can still end up hosting a playoff game in the opening round, but would need wins at Lock Haven and Gannon and help from other games.
Slippery Rock got on the board first Saturday when
Lauren Impey scored her second goal of the year off an assist from
Stephanie Buckenheimer in the 28th minute. That tally would stand until the 69th minute when Liz Debo recorded her 12th goal of the year for Edinboro to tie the game at 1-1.
After Slippery Rock's last second goal was waived off, both teams had chances in the overtime sessions. The teams matched each other with two shots each in the extra sessions, but both keepers were up to the challenge.
Dana O'Neill, who finished with seven saves for Slippery Rock, preserved the tie when she raced out of the net to stop a one-on-one breakaway in the 106th minute. Her counterpart, Meghan Kelly, finished the game with three saves for the Fighting Scots.
Edinboro posted advantages of 16-7 in total shots, 8-4 in shots on goal and 3-2 in corner kicks.
Slippery Rock will travel to Gannon Oct. 24 for a PSAC match at 4 p.m. The Rock will close the regular season Saturday at Lock Haven with a 2:30 p.m. match.
The opening round of the PSAC playoffs will take place Oct. 30 at a location and time that will be determined after next week's games.
