Rock rolls by Mansfield, 4-0

Shelby Ward scored one goal and handed out two assists to lead Slippery Rock to a convincing 4-0 win over Mansfield Tuesday at Egli Field.

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University women's soccer team posted a commanding 4-0 win over Mansfield University Tuesday in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference action from James Egli Field.

Tuesday's game marked the final home game of the regular season for Slippery Rock, which improved to 9-4-1 overall and 6-4-1 in PSAC play. Mansfield drops to 2-10-2 overall and 0-9-2 in league games.

Shelby Ward scored one goal and handed out two assists to lead The Rock attack, while Cailin Conner added a goal and an assist and Nicole Krueger and Crysta Ganter each chipped in one goal.

Dana O'Neill played the first 58:09 in goal for SRU and made one save before giving way to Shannon Mahoney, who also made one save in her first collegiate appearance.

Mansfield used two keepers as well, with Alexis Wilhelm allowing two goals and recording two saves in the opening period and Alana Krieger allowing two goals with no saves in the second half.

Slippery Rock pulled the majority of its starters early in the second half and finished the game with a total of 21 players seeing the field.

The Rock posted advantages of 12-4 in total shots, 6-2 in shots on goal and 4-3 in corner kicks.

Ward opened the game's scoring in the 12th minute when she scored into an empty net after taking a cross from Conner for her sixth tally of the year.

Krueger made it 2-0 in the 15th minute when she took a pass from Ward and beat Wilhelm one-on-one for her second goal of the year.

Ganter opened the second half with a goal just 54 seconds in when she put home a failed clear attempt from the Mansfield defense for her second tally of the season.

The final goal of the game came just minutes later when Conner notched her second of the year in the 49th minute off an assist from Ward.

Slippery Rock will play its final three games of the regular season on the road at Edinboro Saturday (Oct. 20), Gannon Oct. 24 and Lock Haven Oct. 27.

The Rock is currently in playoff position in the PSAC standings, tied for fifth with Gannon, with the top eight teams earning playoff berths. The top four seeds will host an opening round game, with the highest remaining seed hosting the semifinals and finals.
