SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University women's basketball team ran out to a 12-1 lead and never looked back in cruising to a 86-51 win over Cheyney in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference crossover game Friday evening at Morrow Field House.
With its third win in a row, Slippery Rock improves to 4-7 overall and 1-6 in PSAC play. Cheyney remains winless at 0-11 overall and 0-7 in PSAC play. The Rock is back in action tomorrow when Shippensburg visits Morrow Field House for a 5:30 p.m. tip in what will mark the final crossover of the season for each team.
Slippery Rock placed five players in double figures en route to scoring a season-high 86 points.
Erinne Cunningham led the way with 19 points, including five 3-pointers.
Danielle Smith chipped in 16 points and six rebounds.
Paris Thomas and
Sherita Stanley each recorded double-doubles. Thomas had 12 points and 10 assists, while Stanley scored 11 points and pulled down 10 rebounds. D'Asia Chambers came off the bench to score 10 points and
Jasmine Cooper added nine points to cap the top scorers.
The Rock finished the game shooting 50.8 percent from the field (33-65), including 34.5 percent from the 3-point line (10-29) and shot 90.0 percent from the free throw line (10-11). The hosts pulled down 41 total rebounds in the game.
Cheyney was led by Nadirah Brown with a game-high 20 points and a team-high eight rebounds. The Wolves shot 33.3 percent from the field (20-60), including 14.3 percent from the 3-point line (1-7) and shot 55.6 percent from the free throw line (10-18). The visitors grabbed 35 total rebounds and turned the ball over 18 times.
Friday's game was all Slippery Rock from the outset as The Rock scored the first seven points of the game and opened up a 12-1 lead less than four minutes into play. Cheyney got its first field goal at the 15:52 mark and got to within eight points at 14-6 with 14:22 to play before SRU put the game out of reach with a 6-0 run.
The Rock pushed its lead out to 17 points on four separate occasions over the remainder of the first half before closing the period with an 18 point lead, 41-23.
Cheyney would never get closer than 18 the rest of the way.
The three-game winning streak is the first for Slippery Rock since the 2009-10 season. The Rock will look to continue the momentum tomorrow evening against Shippensburg.
