SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The third-ranked Edinboro University women's basketball team remained unbeaten with a 68-37 win over Slippery Rock Saturday in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference action at Morrow Field House.
The Rock (5-11, 2-10 PSAC) led for nearly six-and-a-half minutes in the first half and held Edinboro (16-0, 12-0 PSAC) to is lowest point total in a single half all season and trailed by just seven at the break, 24-17.
The Lady Scots pulled away with a 44-point showing in the second half and shut down the SRU offense to the tune of a season-low 37 total points and 24.5 percent shooting efficiency.
Danielle Smith led Slippery Rock with 14 points and seven rebounds.
D'Asia Chambers added seven points off the bench and
Paris Thomas chipped in six points to cap the top scorers.
SRU was ice cold from the floor, connecting on 12-of-49 attempts to make up the 24.5 percent efficiency. The Rock made just 1-of-12 attempts from the 3-point arc and was 12-of-16 at the free throw line (75 percent).
Edinboro struggled in the opening half before shooting 57.1 percent in the second half to finish with a 48.1 percent efficiency on 26-of-54 shooting. Included in that figure was a 30 percent mark from long range (3-of-10). The Lady Scots were 13-of-18 from the free throw line (72.2 percent) and posted a 40-27 rebounding advantage.
Samantha Blazetic led Edinboro with 18 points and nine rebounds, while Renee' Brown also added 18 points.
The Lady Scots scored the first five points of the game and led until Slippery Rock tied the game for the first time at 7-7 just over five minutes in. The Rock took the lead with a free throw from Thomas and maintained the advantage until Edinboro notched the score at 12-12 with 8:27 to play in the half.
Edinboro capped a 10-0 run to lead 21-12 with just under five minutes remaining in the half while Slippery Rock went ice cold from the floor, not connecting on a field goal for over 11 minutes until Chambers hit a jumper with nine seconds left in the half to make it 24-17.
The Lady Scots opened the second half with a 12-4 run to push the lead out to 16 points and never looked back in pulling away for the win.
Slippery Rock will travel to Gannon Wednesday, Jan. 25 for a 5:30 p.m. PSAC matchup before returning home to host No. 18 Indiana (Pa.) next Saturday.
