MILLERSVILLE, Pa. – After a thunderstorm delay that lasted more than two hours, the 22nd-ranked Slippery Rock University women's soccer team handed Millersville a 2-0 defeat Wednesday afternoon in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference action at Chryst Field.
Lightning and heavy rains forced the start time of Wednesday's conference opener to be pushed back two hours and 15 minutes and the game was played in sloppy conditions as the rain continued throughout the match.
The wet field and four-plus hours of travel didn't affect the Irish duo of
Kara Mullins and
Lucy Hannon, who each tallied first half goals to put The Rock (2-1, 1-0 PSAC) out front early.
Mullins scored the eventual game-winner in the 11th minute when she took a pass from
Shelby Ward and found the upper corner of the net for her third goal of the season. She added to her points on the day when she assisted Hannon, who scored into nearly the same location in the 20th minute for what was also her third goal of the game.
Millersville (2-1, 0-1 PSAC) managed only two shots on target and had a late shot hit the crossbar, but Slippery Rock keeper
Lisa Rodgers stopped both shots on goal to earn her first win and first shutout in a Rock uniform. Marauder keeper Laura Reed suffered her first loss of the season after allowing two goals and recording two saves.
Slippery Rock finished the game with advantages of 13-6 in total shots, 4-2 in shots on goal and 5-4 in corner kicks. Millersville managed just two shots and no shots on target in the second half.
The Rock will look to keep their momentum going when defending conference champion and second-ranked West Chester visits Thompson Stadium Saturday. The game, originally scheduled for James Egli Field, has been moved to the stadium turf and will now kickoff at 1:15 p.m. following the men's game at 11 a.m.
