Lees-McRae Box Score
KISSIMMEE, Fla. - The Slippery Rock University softball team continued its time at the Rebel Spring Games Monday by picking up a pair of wins over Wilmington, 8-4, and Lees-McRae, 9-6.
Shardea Croes paced Slippery Rock (3-1) in its 8-4 win over Wilmington by going 2-for-3 at the plate with three RBIs. The speedy senior turned what would have been a routine extra-base hit for most players into an inside the park home run in the fourth inning.
After giving up four runs in the first inning,
Shauna Walker (1-1) settled down and did not surrender a run over the next three innings to earn the win as The Rock's offense came alive.
The fourth inning proved to be the turning point in the contest. Trailing 4-1, Slippery Rock stormed back with four runs in the inning with
Croes leading the the charge with her aforementioned three-run home run that put The Rock up 5-4.
After four innings of work by Walker,
Shaylee Ianno came on in relief and picked up right where Walker left off. Ianno, who recorded the win over Wilmington in Sunday's game, did not allow a run in the game's final three innings.
SRU's batters would add two more runs in the fifth inning and one more in the sixth inning to help ensure the 8-4 victory.
Shortstop
Kirsten Brant, first baseman
Jenna Geibel and catcher
Brittany Jones all tallied doubles with Jones and Geibel each driving a run.
A slow start would not be a problem for Slippery Rock's offense in its 9-6 win over Lees-McRae.
Geibel drove in two runs off of a single in the first inning to give SRU an early lead. The Rock's offense proceeded to plate three more runs in the second inning for a seemingly comfortable 5-0 lead.
However, a five-run fourth inning from Lees-McRae tied the game at 5-5 before Slippery Rock managed to regain its lead by scoring four runs over the next two innings to take a 9-5 advantage into the seventh inning. Lees-McRae managed just one run in the seventh as SRU held on for the 9-6 win.
Outfielder
Gina Brenzo had a fine game offensively, going 3-for-4. Brant and
Jordan Zeunges both had two-hit games with Zeunges adding three RBIs.
Ianno (2-0) recorded the win. After pitching three scoreless innings to start the game, Ianno reentered the contest in the fifth inning after the LMC rally to end the comeback attempt.
Slippery Rock will look for two more wins Tuesday when it takes on Saginaw Valley State at 1 p.m. and Lake Erie at 3 p.m.
