Rock men have successful weekend in Ohio

A win by Brady Wert in the heptathlon and another record-breaking toss by Chris Warning in the weight throw highlighted a weekend that saw Slippery Rock send athletes to both the NCAA Division II Team Challenge in Findlay, Ohio and the Jim Wuske Invitational in Alliance, Ohio.

Brady Wert posted an NCAA provisional qualifying mark in the heptathlon and Chris Warning improved on his previous NCAA provisional mark in the weight throw to highlight another solid weekend for the Slippery Rock University men's indoor track and field team.
 
While the majority of the team competed at the Jim Wuske Invitational in Alliance, Ohio, Wert, Warning, Cameron Daugherty, Andrew Greenslade and Hans Lubich traveled to Findlay, Ohio to take part in the NCAA Division II Team Challenge.

Wert would earn his NCAA provisional qualifying status by accumulating 4,699 points and winning the heptathlon competition. Greenslade and Lubich also competed in the heptathlon, earning eighth and 11th place finishes respectively. Greenslade ended the competition with 3,688 points while Lubich totaled 3,560 points.

With a toss of 18.67 meters, Warning broke the SRU school-record in the weight throw for the third time this season. His throw netted him a fourth-place finish.

Daugherty, who has already met the NCAA provisional standard in the pole vault, finished in third place in the event after clearing 4.68 meters.

Leading the way for The Rock at the Wuske Invitational was the 4x400-meter relay team of Mason McLaughlin, Kevin Jewel, Ethan Geisler and Dan Hedglin. The foursome earned a second-place finish with a time of 3:26.18. A second Rock team comprised of Trevor Foley, Jason Jamieson, Michael Dicocco and Jonathan Boyd finished in fourth place with a time of 3:29.39.
  
Highlighting The Rock's field event competitors at the Wuske Invitational was Terrece Draper, who finished in third place in the triple jump and improved on his previous Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference qualifying mark with a jump of 13.97 meters. Draper also came in 10th place in the long jump with a mark of 6.33 meters. Shawn Vanderbrook joined Draper in both contests and placed 13th in the triple jump (12.65 meters) and 17th in the long jump (6.18 meters).

Derick Fiedler placed fourth in the high jump with a mark of 1.85 meters while Ryan Camody and Dave Caldwell finished in eighth and 11th place in pole vault. Camody met the PSAC standard with a clearance of 4.26 meters while Caldwell cleared 4.11 meters.

A trio of Rock runners qualified for the PSAC Championships in the 55-meter hurdles with Kris Stalma leading the charge in fourth place at a time of 7.77. Hedglin (7.98) and Geisler (8.11) were not far behind, placing eighth and 11th respectively.

Slippery Rock also landed four runners in the top-15 of the 400-meter dash. Foley was the top Rock athlete, coming in fifth place with a time of 51.38. Geisler (51.74), Jamieson (51.84) and Vanere Maynard (51.88) finished back-to-back-to-back in ninth, 10th and 11th. 

Other notable finishes by Slippery Rock runners included Maynard and McLaughlin tying for 10th place in the 200-meter dash at 23.76 and Dan Henry placing 10th in the 800-meter run in a time of 2:02.84.

Slippery Rock will be back in action next Friday at the Baldwin-Wallace Invitational and Saturday at the Akron Invite.
