Daugherty, Warning win titles on day one of PSAC Championships

Chris Warning won the weight throw and Cameron Daugherty was the PSAC’s top pole vault competitor on the first day of the PSAC Championships.

EDINBORO, Pa. – Chris Warning and Cameron Daugherty both claimed individual championships to lead the Slippery Rock University men's indoor track and field team on day one of the 2011 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships at Edinboro University's Mike S. Zafirovski Sports & Recreation Dome.

Slippery Rock will begin day two of the PSAC Championships on Sunday in third place with 35 points. Shippensburg is leading the competition with 54.5 points and Lock Haven is in second place with 41 points. Kutztown (27) and East Stroudsburg (23) currently occupy fourth and fifth place.

Warning won the weight throw, and earned 10 points for SRU in the process, with a toss of 18.49 meters. Joseph Kelly also scored a point for Slippery Rock in the weight throw by placing eighth after a throw of 15.56 meters.

Daugherty's championship came in the pole vault where he registered a clearance of 4.87 meters to earn the win and the accompanying 10 points. Ryan Camody also helped The Rock's cause on Saturday by picking up four points with a fifth-place finishing throw of 4.57 meters.

Slippery Rock's 4x800-meter relay team of Morgan Elliott, Dan Henry, Kevin Jewel and Jason Jamieson secured eight more points for SRU with a second-place finish in a time of 7:46.23. 

Jason Leonard rounded out SRU's scoring on the day with two points in the 5000-meter run. Leonard finished the race in seventh place with a time of 15:02.55.

Kris Stalma and Dan Hedglin both advanced to the finals of the 60-meter hurdles, placing third and sixth respectively in the prelims. Stalma clocked a time of 8.31 while Hedglin registered a time of 8.45. Ethan Geisler (8.53) finished in ninth place and just missed out on qualifying for the finals by 0.01. The 60-meter hurdle champion will be decided on Sunday.

DJ Chisom had the fourth-fastest qualifying time in the 60-meter dash, 6.94, to advance out of the prelims and into Sunday's final.

Through four events in the heptathlon, Brady Wert is in third place with 2,607 points, Andrew Greenslade is in fifth place with 2,578 points and Hans Lubich is in ninth place with 2,429 points. The final three events will be held on Sunday.

The PSAC championships will conclude Sunday with finals in all remaining events. Competition is scheduled to begin at 10:30 a.m. The Rock placed sixth at last year's PSAC Championships.
