Rock women drop 60-50 decision to PSAC rival East Stroudsburg

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. -- Visiiting East Stroudsburg University rode a 15-2 run midway through the second half of action to a 60-50 win over Slippery Rock University in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference women's basketball "crossover" action Saturday afternoon in Morrow Field House.

The Warriors (3-2 overall, 1-2 PSAC) held a 41-40 lead with 13:30 left to play before they went on the decisive run and took their largest lead of the game, 56-42, with 4:30 left to play.

The Rock (1-4 overall, 0-3 PSAC) were unable to close the gap to less than 10 points in the final four-plus minutes.

Senior forward Danielle Smith scored a game-high 16 points for The Rock. Junior guard Erinne Cunningham (pictured) added 13 points and six rebounds and sophomore forward Jasmine Cooper chipped in nine points and a game-high 10 rebounds.

Andrea Veres scored 12 points for East Stroudsburg.

Freshman guard Nicole Smith and Cunningham buried 3-point shots on back-to-back Rock possessions to give the hosts a 23-21 lead with 2:43 left in the first half before East Stroudsburg scored six unanswered points to take the lead for good.

SRU, which trailed by a 31-25 margin at halftime, used a 7-2 run to trim the deficit to the aforementioned one-point gap, 41-40.

The Rock finished the game with a 44% (20-46) efficiency on its field-goal attempts, made only 3 of 15 shots from beyond the 3-point range and sank seven of 10 free throws. The hosts held a 30-28 rebounding advantage but were on the high side of a 26-17 turnover comparison.

East Stroudsburg shot 47% (23-49) from the field, 33% (2-6) from 3-point range and 57% (12-21) from the foul line.

The Rock will seek to end a three-game losing skid Sunday when they host Kutztown in a 1 p.m. game in Morrow Field House.
