SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio -- D'Asia Chambers scored four points in the final minute of regulation to send the game to overtime where the Slippery Rock University women's basketball team scored a comeback 62-57 win over Notre Dame College of Ohio Wednesday night in non-conference action.
Chambers, making her Slippery Rock debut, knocked down jumpers with 51 and 10 seconds remaining in regulation to tie the game and finished with a double-double of 16 points and 11 rebounds.
Wednesday night's win improved The Rock to 3-7 overall on the season, while Notre Dame dropped to 5-7 overall. The game was also the final non-conference game of the season for SRU, which will play only Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference contests for the remainder of the season.
Chambers was joined in the double-double category by
Jasmine Cooper, who scored a game-high 17 points and pulled down 10 rebounds.
Sherita Stanley added eight points, nine rebounds and three steals, while
Erinne Cunningham added seven points and
Danielle Smith chipped in five points and grabbed nine rebounds.
Slippery Rock shot 35 percent from the field (22-of-63), including 19 percent from the 3-point arc (4-of-21) and was 68 percent from the free throw line (13-of-19). The Rock pulled down 52 total rebounds and committed 32 turnovers.
Notre Dame was led by Danielle Ledrich with 17 points. The Falcons shot 29 percent from the field (20-of-69), including 20 percent from the 3-point line (4-of-20) and were 54 percent at the charity stripe (13-of-24). The hosts pulled down 45 total rebounds and committed 23 turnovers.
The game was close throughout its entirety, with neither team enjoying more than a 10 point lead at any time.
After the teams traded free throws to open the contest, Notre Dame converted the first field goal more than five minutes into play to take a 4-2 lead with 14:36 remaining in the opening half. The hosts would never trail again in regulation, opening up a lead of 10 points at 27-17 with 2:25 before the break.
Slippery Rock closed the half on a 6-1 run to trail by two, 28-26, at the intermission.
Notre Dame maintained its lead out of the gate in the second half until Cooper hit a jumper with 12:17 to play to tie the game at 37-37. The Falcons answered back with the next three points and led until Chambers knocked down a jumper with 5:24 to play to tie the game at 46-46.
Again, the hosts responded, this time pushing the lead out to six points when Ledrich knocked down a 3-pointer to make it 53-47 with 2:53 to play.
The Rock defense stepped up and did not allow a single point in the final 2:53. Cooper hit a jumper to cut the lead to four points at 2:28 before Chambers knocked down shots with 51 and 10 seconds left to tie the game.
In the extra session, Notre Dame got a free throw to take the lead early, but a jumper from
Emilee Vitez put Slippery Rock up 55-54 with 2:44 to play.
A jumper from Stanley pushed the lead out to 57-54 with 1:25 to play and free throws from Cunningham and
Paris Thomas down the stretch sealed the comeback win.
Slippery Rock is back in action in back-to-back PSAC crossover games Jan. 6 and 7, welcoming Cheyney and Shippensburg to Morrow Field House. The Cheyney game will tip at 5:30 p.m. Jan. 6 and the Shippensburg game will follow at 5:30 p.m. Jan. 7.
