SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University women's soccer team ran its stretch of consecutive shutouts to six with a 2-0 victory on the road at Indiana (Pa.) Tuesday afternoon in a crucial Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference match.
With the win, Slippery Rock improves to 9-3-2 overall and 7-2-2 in PSAC action. More importantly the win moves The Rock to 23 points and into a tie for second-place in the league standings. The top four teams at the end of the regular season will host a first round playoff game. Indiana dropped to 8-3-2 overall and 6-3-2 in league play.
The sixth straight shutout increased the time period without allowing a goal to 541:02 for the Slippery Rock defense, which has only allowed one tally in the last 728:02 of action.
Slippery Rock controlled Tuesday's match throughout, most notably in the first half where the visitors put two goals on the board and posted 7-3 advantage in total shots.
The Rock finished the game with advantages of 10-5 in total shots, 5-4 in shots on goal and 8-4 in corner kicks.
Kara Mullins and
Shelby Ward each tallied goals for SRU and
Emer Flatley picked up an assist.
Lisa Rodgers continued to be impressive in goal, posting her sixth shutout of the season and lowering her goals against average to 0.49 after making four saves in the game.
Mara Hricik was credited with the loss after allowing two goals and recording three saves.
Mullins opened the game's scoring at the 13:59 mark when she buried a corner kick off the foot of Flatley to put The Rock up 1-0.
Ward added an insurance tally at 27:13 when she beat Hricik on a breakaway.
The two goal margin stood until the halftime break, with Slippery Rock posting a 7-3 edge in shots, a 3-2 advantage in shots on goal and 4-2 edge in corner kicks.
The Rock defense maintained its stronghold on the game in the second half, only allowing the Crimson Hawks one shot on goal, which Rodgers saved to preserve the shutout.
Tuesday's game was the final away game of the regular season for Slippery Rock, which will close the year with four consecutive home games.
The Rock will open that home stretch with a 1 p.m. game against Wheeling Jesuit Saturday, Oct. 15. That match will close the non-conference slate, with three PSAC games scheduled to end the year.
