SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – Junior point guard
Shannon Lee's all-around strong floor game led the Slippery Rock University women's basketball team to a 59-43 win Sunday afternoon over visiting Mansfield University in the final Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference crossover game of the season.
Lee scored a season-high 20 points, grabbed eight rebounds and handed out five assists as The Rock ended a four-game losing skid and improved their season record to 2-10. She was 6-of-9 shooting from the field, 0-1 from 3-point range and a perfect 8-of-8 from the foul line.
Lee was one of three Rock players who finished the game with double-digit scoring totals. Junior guard
Sherita Stanley added 17 points and eight rebounds, while junior forward
Danielle Smith chipped in 12 points and five rebounds.
Mallory Moore scored a team-high 16 points for Mansfield, which suffered its fifth straight loss and saw its season record fall to 5-7.
Sunday's game was The Rock's final tuneup for PSAC-Western Division action. SRU closes out a three-game homestand Wednesday with a 6 p.m. game against Clarion. That will be the first of 14 straight division games the Green and White will play to close out its 2010-11 regular-season schedule.
The Rock came out of the proverbial gate red-hot Sunday as they scored the first six and 16 of the first 20 points in the game to take a double-digit lead six and a half minutes into action.
The hosts' offense sputtered and failed to score a point in the next eight and a half minutes, though, as the Green and White were 0-for-12 from the field and committed six turnovers.
Mansfield took advantage of The Rock's scoring drought to put together a 15-2 run that erased the early deficit and gave the Mounties their first and only lead of the game, a 19-18 edge with 3:15 left in the half.
The Rock regained its composure and made four of its final six shots from the field to score the final eight points of the first half and take a 26-19 lead into the intermission.
Lee scored eight points to lead The Rock's first-half offensive attack while Smith added six and Stanley four points and five rebounds.
The Rock finished the half with a 34% (12-35) efficiency from the field hindered significantly by an 0-for-13 effort from 3-point range. The Green and White made both of their first-half free throws.
Mansfield, meanwhile, shot 31% (8-26) from the field, was 0-for-2 from long range and made three of five free throws.
The Rock outrebounded Mansfield by a 24-17 margin in the opening 20 minutes and had one less turnover, 8-7. The Rock scored 10 points off Mansfield miscues, while the Mounties converted Rock errors into six points.
SRU opened the second half of action in the same fashion it started and ended the first stanza as The Rock scored the first six points to push their lead to 33-19 at the 17:00 mark.
Mansfield never closed the gap to less than 10 points in the final 17 minutes of action.
Final statistics showed SRU shooting 39% (22-56) from the field, a number drug down by an ice-cold 16% (3-19) effort from 3-point range. The Rock was a perfect 12-of-12 from the foul line.
Mansfield finished the game with a 33% (16-49) efficiency on its action shots that included a 22% (2-9) effort from beyond the arc. The Mounties made 69% (9-13) of their free throws.
SRU finished the game with a 59-43 rebounding advantage but had two more turnovers (18-16) than their guests. The Rock outscored Mansfield by a 32-20 margin “in the paint” but were outscored by a 21-8 margin “off the bench.”
Notes:
Lee's scoring effort Sunday came five days after she scored a previous season-high 19 points in a loss at Kutztown … The Rock defensive effort Sunday resulted in Mansfield tying its lowest point total of the season.
