SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – Bloomsburg University buried 15 shots from beyond the 3-point arc Saturday afternoon en route to a 75-46 win over hosting Slippery Rock University in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference women's basketball crossover action.
The Huskies (8-3), who attempted 31 treys, finished the game with a 48.4% efficiency from long range, slightly better than their overall showing of 44% (28-63) on all field goal attempts. The guests made 57% (4-7) of their free throw attempts.
SRU, which suffered its fourth straight loss and saw its season record drop to 1-10, shot 33% (18-54) from the field, 24% (5-21) from 3-point range and 71% (5-7) from the foul line.
The Rock, who outrebounded the Huskies by a 37-35 margin, further hurt their victory hopes by committing 25 turnovers compared to 15 for the visitors.
Junior forward
Danielle Smith scored 10 points and grabbed six rebounds in the second half of action to finish the game with Rock team-high totals of 12 points and eight rebounds.
Sophomore forward
Emilee Vitez added nine points and six rebounds and sophomore guard
Alex Beatty also scored nine points for SRU.
Dana Wieller buried five 3-point shots en route to a game-high 21 points for Bloomsburg. Kelsey Gallagher (3 treys) added 16 points for the Huskies and Hannah Geedey (5 treys) chipped in 15 points.
The Rock returns to action at 1 p.m. Sunday, when they will host Mansfield in the fourth and final game of this year's PSAC interdivisional series.
SRU then opens its PSAC-Western Division schedule with a 6 p.m. home game Wednesday vs. Clarion.
Bloomsburg travels to Mercyhurst College in Erie for a Sunday game to conclude its interdivisional schedule.
As has been their routine throughout the season, The Rock started slow Saturday. The Green and White shot a frigid 25% (2-8) from the field and committed eight turnovers in the first eight minutes of action.
Fortunately, Bloomsburg didn't have a much better start. The Huskies made only 33% (4-12) of their shots and turned the ball over five times. That was enough to give the Huskies a 13-7 advantage on the scoreboard.
Four minutes later, at the 7:30 mark of the first half, though, The Rock had trimmed the deficit to only one point, 15-14. Keying the 7-2 Rock run were a pair of jumpers by Vitez and a trey by junior point guard
Shannon Lee.
Bloomsburg answered the Rock run with a 9-2 run of its own to push the difference to eight points, 24-16, with 2:45 left before halftime.
The Huskies took a 26-21 lead into the intermission.
Vitez led The Rock's first-half effort with seven points and five rebounds. Beatty and Lee each scored five points with Lee handing out three assists.
Gallagher led Bloomsburg with eight first-half points, while Wieller added six.
Halftime statistics showed The Rock with a 35% (8-23) efficiency from the field, a 25% (2-8) showing from 3-point range and a perfect 3-for-3 effort at the foul line.
Bloomsburg finished the first half with a 32% (9-28) efficiency from the field, a 40% (6-15) reading from 3-point range and a perfect 2-for-2 showing at the foul line.
The Rock outrebounded the Huskies by a 22-12 margin in the opening 20 minutes but were also on the high end of a 15-8 turnover comparison.
Bloomsburg opened the second half of action with a 23-10 scoring run that pushed the Huskies lead to 18 points, 49-31, with 11:30 left to play in the game.
The Rock never got closer than 11 points the remainder of the game. The largest lead of the game was a 30-point, 73-43, difference with one minute left.
