SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The 13th-ranked California University women's soccer team scored two second half goals and benefitted from an own goal en route to a 3-0 win over Slippery Rock Friday at Egli Field in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference match.
After a scoreless first half, California (7-0-1, 3-0-1 PSAC) got on the scoreboard first when a shot from Tonya Fabian was deflected into the net by a Rock (4-3-0, 2-3-0 PSAC) defender in the 63rd minute.
The Vulcans added another goal in the 67th minute when Channing Wimer scored over Rock keeper
Alli Bird from 25 yards out. The game's final goal came in the 78th minute when Erin Feltz played a pass through The Rock defense to Bethany Smyda, who found the bottom left corner of the net.
The Rock controlled possession for most of the first half, finishing with a 5-4 advantage in total shots and narrowly missing on four separate scoring opportunies. The best two chances came for
Danielle Turner and
Alison Hindley, who each just missed the net wide.
California edge SRU8-3 in total shots in the second half and 5-1 in shots on goal to finish with advantages of 12-8 in total shots and 7-3 in shots on target. Both teams were awarded two corner kicks in the match.
Bird was credited with the loss after recording four saves and allowing three goals. Her counterpart, Paula Jackson, earned the win after posting three saves.
The Rock is back in action tomorrow when Shippensburg travels to Egli Field for a 2 p.m. PSAC match.
