EAST STROUDSBURG, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University women's soccer team earned a 2-0 shutout over East Stroudsburg Saturday afternoon in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference action.
The Rock (4-2-0, 2-2-0 PSAC) scored one goal late in the first half and added an insurance tally late in the game while holding off a strong second half push from the Warriors (2-3-1, 1-3-0 PSAC).
Slippery Rock finished the game with advantages of 18-14 in total shots and 8-6 in shots on goal, but East Stroudsburg was awarded 11 corner kicks to just two for SRU.
The Warriors came out firing in the second half, outshooting SRU 5-1 over the first 30 minutes of the half. The Rock responded by maintaining a 5-2 advantage in shots over the final 12 minutes.
Danielle Turner broke a scoreless tie in the 42nd minute when she found the back of the net off an assist from
Alison Hindley to send the game to halftime with The Rock leading 1-0.
Kara Mullins added an insurance tally in the 79th minute when she sent a header into the net off a double assist from Hindley and
Juliana Howell.
Alli Bird was outstanding in her first start in goal this season, picking up the shutout after recording six saves.
Melissa Myers took the loss in goal for ESU, allowing two goals and recording six saves.
The Rock will rest during the upcoming week in preparation for a second consecutive weekend of back-to-back conference action. California (Pa.) will visit Slippery Rock Friday (Sept. 24), followed by Shippensburg coming to town Saturday (Sept. 25). Both games are set to kickoff at 2 p.m.
