SRU finishes 1-1 on final day of Pioneer Invitational

The Rock defeated Seton Hill 3-1 before losing 3-0 to Point Park as junior Kaylee Smith earns a spot on the all-tournament team.

PITTSBURGH, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University volleyball team split a pair of matches on the final day of the Point Park University Volleyball Pioneer Invitational. In its first match of the day, The Rock (2-6) defeated Seton Hill 3-1 before falling to Point Park 3-0 in the final match of the night.

Against Seton Hill, Slippery Rock took the first two sets 25-14 and 25-15 before losing the third set 25-19. However, SRU would take the fourth set thanks to a gutsy two-point win (27-25). The Green and White have now won eight consecutive matches over The Griffins.

The Rock then came up short against tournament-host Point Park in straight sets 25-16, 25-14 and 25-23.

After an outstanding effort throughout the tournament, junior Kaylee Smith was selected to the all-tournament team. In Three matches this weekend, Smith accumulated 28 kills, 30 digs, two blocks and one ace.

Also enjoying a solid weekend for The Rock was freshman Caroline Houston who ended the three-match stretch with 21 kills and 14 digs. Junior Kristin Slavoski also had a nice run in Pittsburgh with 27 kills.

Slippery Rock will now head into next weekend's PSAC Crossover for matches with Lock Haven (2:30 p.m.) and Millersville (5 p.m.) on Friday (Sept. 17) at Lock Haven and then travel to East Stroudsburg on Saturday for matches against East Stroudsburg (10 a.m.) and Shippensburg (3 p.m.).
