EDINBORO, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University men's track and field team got a first-place and school-record performance from its 4x800-meter relay team to lead The Rock effort Saturday at the first day of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference championships, hosted at Edinboro's Mike S. Zafirovski Sports & Recreation Dome.
The Rock foursome of
Phil Rector,
Jason Jamieson,
Kevin Jewel and
Dan Henry took the top spot in the event with a time of 7:48.80, setting the new Slippery Rock record in the process by breaking the 2008 mark of 7:51.91 run by Jamieson, Matt Bluman, Andy Notareschi and Justin Gavazzi.
Rector, Jamieson and Jewel are each among the top-four fastest qualifiers for the 800-meter individual final, which will take place Sunday.
Jimmy Schneider scored points Saturday with a fifth-place finish in the pole vault, clearing 4.61 meters.
The Rock also saw points from
Chris Warning and
Joel Peters, who placed fifth and sixth in the weight throw. Warning was fifth with a throw of 17.24 meters, followed by Peters with a toss of 17.07m.
Brady Wert leads the heptathlon after the first day of competition, posting a score of 2,876 points through the first four events. The final three events will be contested Sunday.
Kris Stalma posted the sixth-fastest qualifying time in the preliminary round of the 60-meter hurdles, crossing the line in 8.45 seconds to advance to Sunday's final.
The Rock sits sixth in the team standings after the first day of competition with 21 points. Lock Haven and Shippensburg are tied for the lead with 39 points each, followed by East Stroudsburg (33), Kutztown (28) and Indiana (24).
