WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University women's soccer team scored three goals in a span of less than five minutes and held Mansfield without a single shot in the second half en route to a 4-0 win in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference match at Balls Mills Soccer Complex Wednesday.
The Rock (7-3-1, 5-3-1 PSAC) was in control from the outset of the match, despite having to deal with a last minute change of location and playing surface due to inclement weather. Earlier in the day, Mansfield (1-8-1, 0-7-1 PSAC) officials were forced to move the game from the campus' natural grass field to a turf field nearly 45 minutes away.
Shelby Ward netted the first two goals of the game before
Kara Mullins and
Alison Hindley added insurance tallies.
Toni DiRenzo,
Stephanie Buckenheimer and
Rachel Knapp all picked up assists, while
Ashley Paganie led the team with five total shots, including three shots on goal.
Slippery Rock took over the match toward the end of the first half, scoring three goals in a span of less than five minutes and finishing the half with a 9-3 advantage in shots.
Ward opened the scoring in the 32nd minute when she beat her defender and Mansfield keeper Samantha DeLiere into the bottom right corner of the net.
Ward struck again less than two minutes later, this time converting an assist from Buckenheimer and finding the same spot in the back of the net to put SRU up 2-0.
Two minutes later, in the 36th minute, Mullins added to the lead when she took a pass from DiRenzo and scored into the left side of the net.
Hindley added a fourth goal in the 77th minute when she headed in a corner kick from Knapp to cap the game's scoring.
Slippery Rock finished the match with advantages of 17-3 in total shots, 12-3 in shots on goal and 4-2 in corner kicks. All of Mansfield's shots came in the first half.
Alli Bird was credited with the win in goal after recording three saves. Dana O'Neill played the final 17 minutes of the game and did not face a shot.
DeLiere was credited with the loss for Mansfield after allowing three goals and recording four saves. Alexis Wilhelm played the second half and allowed one goal while also recording four saves.
The Rock returns home for a crucial PSAC match Saturday when No. 22 Kutztown visits the turf at Thompson Stadium for a 1 p.m. kickoff.
