Lakers edge Rock in five sets

ERIE, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University volleyball team fell in five sets Friday night at Mercyhurst College. The 3-2 defeat was the second five-set loss in as many games for The Rock (6-9, 4-3 PSAC).

Mercyhurst (13-3, 5-1 PSAC), won the first set 25-19 before Slippery Rock claimed sets two and three with a pair of 25-19 victories. However, the Lakers were able to defend their home court, and extend their winning streak to three matches, thanks to a 25-15 win in the fourth set and a 15-8 win in the fifth.

Junior outside hitter Alee Kromer posted a match-high 21 digs in the defeat. Kromer has now reached the 20-dig mark in six matches this season.

Senior setter/defensive specialist Anna Bixler and senior setter Kim Wilson each had double-doubles in the defeat. Bixler recorded 14 assists and 13 digs while Wilson had 24 assists and 11 digs.

Also leading SRU with 14 and 10 kills respectively were junior outside hitter Kaylee Smith and freshman outside hitter Lauren Rojek. Junior outside hitter Kristin Slavoski chipped in nine kills.

As a team, Slippery Rock recorded hitting percentages of .156 and .231 in its winning sets compared to .161, .024 and -.077 in losing sets.

Chelsea Jensen led Mercyhurst with 20 kills and 15 digs.

Slippery Rock will look to end its two-match losing streak at 3 p.m. on Saturday against host Edinboro.
