CLARION, PA—Despite having a 28-23 halftime lead, the Slippery Rock University women's basketball team dropped a 61-48 contest at Clarion Saturday afternoon.
The Rock (3-14, 0-4 PSAC-West) was led by
Julie Molloy scoring 11 points, four steals and five rebounds. Both
Bethany Caudill and
Grace Palucis scored eight points, and
Amanda Mikatavage led the team on the glass with seven rebounds.
Clarion (10-7, 1-3 PSAC-West) had three players record double-digit scoring marks, including Bethany Koch who led the team with 17 points. Janelle Zabresky recorded 13 rebounds and two blocks.
Each team was held scoreless until
Nikki Presto hit a three-pointer to give SRU the lead with 15:35 left in the first half. The Rock led by as many as 13 points in the half, and did not relinquish the lead during that time. SRU ended the half with a six point, 28-23 lead.
SRU out-rebounded Clarion 22-18 in the first half, and both teams shot 9-28 from the floor at 32.1%.
In the second half, the Golden Eagles went on a 10-6 run the start the half, and extended the lead to as much as 18 when The Rock went scoreless for over five minutes in the middle of the second half.
The Rock finished the game shooting 23.6% (13-55) from the floor and 24% from behind the arch (6-25).
Clarion shot 36.2% (21-58) from the floor and 30% (6-20) from the thee-point line. Clarion recorded more rebounds (48-45), assists (16-11) and blocks (6-4) through the game.
SRU returns to Morrow Field House for a pair of home games. Wednesday The Rock faces off against Lock Haven and Saturday against Indiana (Pa.). Both games will start at 6 pm.
