SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. -- Carley Work scored an unassisted goal in the seventh minute of overtime Saturday afternoon to give #24 California (Pa.) a 2-1 victory over hosting eighth-ranked Slippery Rock University in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference-Western Division women's soccer action on James W. Egli Soccer Field.
Work's 25-yard shot from the center of the field came off a loose ball after SRU goalie
Sarah Lacy had deflected a shot attempt by one of Work's teammates.
Lacy finished the game with 10 saves while Cal goalie Paula Jackson was credited with six saves.
California outshot The Rock by a 24-11 margin in total shots and a 12-7 advantage in shots on goal. The Rock had a 5-0 advantage in corner kicks and each team was called for 12 fouls.
After the teams batted to a scoreless stalemate in the opening 45 minutes of action, Rock sophomore forward
Alyssa Barrett scored the first goal of the game off an assist from junior forward
Alison Hindley in the 53rd minute.
The goal was Barrett's second of the season and second in as many games.
Cal's Sam Regney tied the score at 1-1 in the 81st minute of action off an assist from Kayla Klimasko.
The win improved Cal's overall record to 3-0 and upped its PSAC-West mark to 2-0.
The Rock, which lost for the first time in three games this fall and are now 1-1 in division play, return to action Tuesday, when the Green and White will travel to Edinboro for a 6 p.m. PSAC-West game.
The Rock then returns home for a 2 p.m. game next Saturday, Sept. 12, against Clarion.
