SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – Mercyhurst scored two goals in the final nine minutes of play to deal a heartbreaking 2-1 loss to the Slippery Rock University women's soccer team in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference-Western Division contest Wednesday at Egli Field.
Momentum shifted in favor of Mercyhurst in the final 10 minutes of play after The Rock allowed an own goal in the 81st minute, when an attempted clear found the back of the Rock net and tied the game at 1-1.
Less than two minutes later, the Lakers added the go-ahead and eventual game-winning goal after a shot by Heather Donovan ricocheted off the crossbar and found Taylor Hilinski, who headed home the goal into an empty net.
Slippery Rock led 1-0 on the strength of
Ashley Paganie's goal off an assist from
Linda Schirmeister in the 72nd minute and held advantages in shots, shots on goal and corner kicks until the 80th minute.
The Lakers finished the game with a 13-12 advantage in total shots after tallying six shots in the final 10 minutes, while Slippery Rock maintained a 5-4 edge in shots on goal and a 7-4 advantage in corner kicks.
Rock keeper
Sarah Lacy was credited with the loss, allowing two goals and recording two saves. Laker keeper Amanda John earned the win after allowing one goal and registering three saves.
With the loss, Slippery Rock drops to 4-3-1 overall and 3-3-1 in PSAC-West play. Mercyhurst improves to 5-3-1 overall and 5-1-1 in league play.
The Rock will travel to Millersville Saturday for a PSAC crossover contest. Kickoff is scheduled for 12 p.m.
