ERIE, Pa. – Gannon University held off a late rush from Slippery Rock to hang on for a 2-1 win in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference-Western Division women's soccer action Saturday in Erie.
The Rock had a furious push during the final seven minutes of the game that saw two corner kicks and five total shots, but Gannon was able to stave off the rush and seal the 2-1 win.
Gannon scored first when Tenyka Francique beat Rock keeper
Sarah Lacy to the short side off a throw in by Sarah Deck in the 13th minute.
Slippery Rock answered in the 20th minute when
Alison Hindley notched an unassisted goal, her third of the season, off a breakaway. Hindley's initial shot hit the post, but she recovered the ricochet and beat the keeper to tie the game at 1-1, a score that held until halftime.
Gannon scored the go-ahead and eventual game-winning goal in the 62nd minute when Kara Prokopchak made a long run down the left side of the field and scored off a crossing pass through the box from Amanda Sharbaugh.
Gannon's Sabrina Chirco was credited with the win in goal after allowing one goal and recording three saves. Lacy was credited with the loss, allowing two goals and recording three saves.
The Rock finished the game with a 11-9 advantage in total shots, while Gannon held a 5-4 advantage in shots on goal and a 3-2 edge in corner kicks.
With the loss, Slippery Rock drops to 4-2-1 overall and 3-2-1 in PSAC-West play. Gannon improves to 4-3-0 overall and 3-3-0 in league play.
The Rock returns to action Wednesday, Sept. 23, when Mercyhurst travels to Egli Field for a 4 p.m. conference matchup.
