SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University women's soccer team handed No. 16-ranked Indiana (Pa.) its first loss of the season Wednesday night, defeating the Crimson Hawks 2-1 under the lights at N. Kerr Thompson Stadium in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference-Western Division contest.
The Rock dominated the first half of play, posting four shots on goal and not allowing a single shot on goal.
Slippery Rock got on the board in the 28th minute when
Shelby Ward found the middle of the net off a crossing pass from
Alyssa Barrett.
Indiana (Pa.) opened the second half strong and surged back into the game when Viann Heder scored inside the far post from 25-yards out off an assist from Heather Robbins in the 56th minute.
From there, The Rock regained control of the game to set up the game-winning goal from
Ashley Paganie, who scored to the far post from 15-yards out off an assist from Barrett in the 76th minute.
Sarah Lacy earned the win in goal for The Rock, allowing one goal and recording two saves. Kelly Brennan took the loss for Indiana (Pa.) after allowing two goals and recording six saves.
The Rock finished the match with advantages of 21-7 in total shots, 8-3 in shots on goal and 2-1 in corner kicks.
Wednesday's game was a crucial contest in the PSAC-West standings, with Slippery Rock entering the match in fourth-place (seven points) and Indiana (Pa.) coming in tied for first (12 points). With the win, The Rock improves to 4-1-1 overall and gains three points to improve to 3-1-1 in conference play. The Crimson Hawks drop to 4-1-0 overall and in league play.
Slippery Rock will travel to Gannon Saturday for another PSAC-West matchup. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
