SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The No.16-ranked Slippery Rock University women's soccer team opened its 2009 season with a 1-0 win over Atlantic Region rival West Virginia Wesleyan Sunday at Egli Field.
Sunday's matchup featured two of the top teams in the Atlantic Region, with The Rock (1-0) picked to win the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference-Western Division and the Bobcats (0-2) selected to win the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.
Slippery Rock pushed the ball deep into the offensive zone following the opening kickoff and earned a corner kick in the second minute of play. On that corner,

Alison Hindley, who headed home the opening goal into the top right corner of the net just 1:52 into the game. That score would prove to be the game-winner.
The Rock controlled possession throughout the entire match, with West Virginia Wesleyan only getting one solid scoring opportunity late in the second half. On that chance, a shot from 20 yards out by Hannah Macormic, Rock keeper
Sarah Lacy made a diving save toward the left post to preserve the shutout.
Lacy earned the win in goal after playing the full 90 minutes and recording two saves. Caroline Lalley was credited with the loss for the Bobcats after allowing one goal and registering seven saves.
The Rock held advantages of 18-2 in total shots, 8-2 in shots on goal and 9-0 in corner kicks.
Hindley finished the game with two shots on goal while
Ashley Paganie led the team with four shots on goal.
Slippery Rock will travel to Lock Haven to open the PSAC-West schedule Wednesday, Sept. 2. Kickoff is scheduled for 2 p.m.
